Bathroom Shower Fixture Caulking

I'm changing the 20 year old bathroom fixtures to Satin Nickel and found a little extra caulking behind the shower trim, see photos.
The new one comes with a black gasket to keep out water, but Foretravel added something more. I'm not a plumber and just want to ask what should I pick up at the hardware store that is going to stick to the corian shower wall, silicone? Would I use mineral spirits be to wipe the corian clean or is alcohol preferred?

Thanks
Ed

Silicone to me is bad and I use polyurethane. I also leave about 1inch cut out at bottom of the foam seal and no caulk in that space so no moisture stays in behind plate and drain's out should it happen. Did this for many years when remodeling homes etc for a living. This method leaves a very fine gap which moisture can vent. Silicone has a habit of separating from surfaces after a while. You need only a very small head around gasket

Thank you Both

I used silicone. The gasket had the cut out so I did not put silicone at the bottom.

Cheap chinese trim plate did not have long enough screws. I used the gold ones from the old trim. Screws under the handle so not visible. The stop tube wasn't tight around trim so I need to caulk that later.

Thanks again
