non skid on roof

I read a post when I was first on the Forum about issues with the dark non skid area at the ladder. Didn't pay enough attention to it until I started the final solar upgrade last week. I sanded all the material off and you can see the heat cracks that were under it. They appear to just be surface cracks, but I will take care of them after my trip to Phoenix next week. Just to let members know it is a problem.

James at Extreme paint had warned me to remove the non-skid by the ladder for that same reason but fortunately someone had already done it. 

Dodged a bullet on that one.

So the best way to get it off is by sanding?? What's the method?

HF sells these, they use a 3M disc. I use them for gasket removal, but with light pressure it removed the non skid easily.

I used a heat gun and peeled mine right off.

I used a sticker scraper and mineral spirits to remove any sticky stuff left.

Since that is a grey area for slipping when wet, how about once removed, tape of the same size area and use a paint material that has sand in it to give the roof in that area some grip again?  That should keep any heat from building up with that method.  What do you all think on that?

Ya, I recommend removing and I would use mineral oil and scraper or heat gun used sparingly.

A grinder/sanding would take a lot of skill to not dig into the fiberglass.  With that skill, another good method.

Yes heat gun only to just WARM the material. Pull at at 90 degree angle slowly to give the adhesive time to release, most of the glue will come with the material.

Guess that wasn't a great idea!
