Air Drier Filter

I changed my air drier filter Saturday . My tanks bleed clean but this filter needs to be serviced once a year and not knowing if the P.O. ever change this one prompted me and I have owned it over a year.. I found my filter dirty as it had collected a small amount of oil and water..The water should be there but the oil tells me my compressor is passing a bit of oil.. If the filter was never changed the oil isn't an issue.. If it was changed a few years ago then I need to replace my air compressor. I will run it a few thousand miles and change it again and if there is any oil the compressor will be changed. This post is intended for the new owners who have never owned a diesel pusher and we have a number of newbies that need to know this.. Clean air is very important because you do not want gunk in any of the many valves on these coaches.. Also bleed your air tanks after each days run and pay attention to what comes out.

Dub,

Your air compressor may be functioning normally even if you do see "some" oil in the dryer filter.

I have the AD-9 dryer on our coach (your coach may use a different style dryer).  According to the manufacturer data sheet, "some" oil in the filter is acceptable.  In fact, "some" oil accumulation in the air tanks is also deemed acceptable.  See (first link below) Trouble Shooting Chart, Part 3, "Oil Present at the Cartridge During Maintenance".

Seems Bendix thinks it is OK for the air compressor to pass "some" oil downstream.  The big question is how much oil is OK, and how much is too much?  Naturally, there is a standard test for that.  In the first link below, see Appendix A, Table A, Column 5.

Of course, how you maintain your coach and when you decide to change stuff out is totally your decision.  DWMYH!

This is true but I want Zero gunk within reach of leveling, ride height or air manifold.

His 96 should be a pure air plus,DQ6020 and DQ6026 will rebuild the whole thing,there's always going to be some gunk.

True there will Always be gunk but service your air drier, keep the tanks bled and keep the gunk away from the valves.. that's my advise and reason for the post for new owners who have never owned a vehicle with an air compressor on it.. Old timers know,, this is merely a pointer for NEW owners. It served me well with air systems in the 40 something Peterbilts, Kenworths and Freightliners I've owned. I'm not a mechanic but I did sign all the checks.

Always being some gunk is a characteristic of an air compressor and the reason for the filtered drier.
