New mattress
Split off from a recent thread about new mattresses. The mattress in my coach was 20 years old. I think it was eight or nine inch thick and it was a coiled mattress. It was actually not too uncomfortable to sleep on and wey put a gelfoam memory topper on top. Still needs a new mattress. I really wanted to go with a purple mattress like David has but I'm a side sleeper and at around 240 lb now I felt that the thicker one would be the one that I would have to get. Those are really heavy, and thick. And they're also very expensive. I got on this mattress forum website and asked a question about what would be the best mattress on top of a big diesel engine. Didn't get a very good answer. So I decided to make my own. I went to a website called DIY natural bedding. I had them make me a queen-size ticking that was expandable. I had to make it for a 9 inch mattress expandable to 11 inches. It was made with organic cotton. I got it a couple weeks ago but it's at in the box until today. I also got three in of natural latex in a queen-size. It's my pretty decent latex. From sailrite I got four in of high-density marine-grade foam, in a medium firmness. So the ticking unzips and opens like a book, and when the four inch high density foam, on top of that 2 inch memory foam gel infused, on top of that the latex, and on top of that I put spun wool. I also got that from the DIY natural bedding shop. I zipped it all up. Haven't slept on it yet. They say it takes up to a week for the foam to fully expand. I have room to add some more if needed. I also thought about putting in a froli travel under the mattress. This is like mini coils that go under a mattress to not only allow airflow but also act as springs as well.
time will tell how good this mattress is but I expect it will last the rest of my life. The really nice thing about it is it's adjustable. All I have to do is unzip it and change the densities or the thicknesses. And it's adjustable and expandable. You can also take the outer ticking off and wash that if you needed to.
