Vanity Door Repair

While driving home on 395 last week, we hit a few bumps causing the bathroom vanity door to come open. I heard it come open but it only swung a  couple of times before it came apart and fell onto the floor. With all the chances to hit something and do a lot of damage, it just landed on the carpet with a big crash.

The very heavy door is only held on by a little glue covering about 1 5/8 inches at each end and secured by three tiny nails driving in at an angle about an eighth of an inch from the joint. It looks like the nails may have been slightly rusty at build time or from a damp environment when we have taken showers. They were still intact but pulled out. Anyway, not much holding the mirror part of the door on to the wood with the hinges. No biscuits or dowels were installed at the factory.

After gluing the parts back together, I drilled two holes at each end and used Camo screws used with the Camo hidden deck screw tool to secure the main part of the door to the hinged part. After drilling a pilot hole the total length, I used a larger bit to give the head room to be recessed about an eighth of an inch without splitting the wood when installed.

From now on, I won't yell "deal with it" when the obviously brighter DW tells me that something is wrong with one of the vanity doors.

The bottom screw had fallen out (not the mounting screws) allowing the ball to drop down so the door started wildly swinging until it fell off.
