Coleman AC PROBLEM

Have the original Coleman R-22 AC's,they have 2 knobs,1 for on, off and speeds and 1 for the temp from hot to cold. The last week or so when you shut the unit off the compressor still wants to kick in even with the switch off,if you turn the thermostat knob from
cool to the hot setting it finally stops, think maybe Iv'e got a relay or something sticking on,any ideas?
