Turbo Temp

What is the approximate temperature just above the DD6V92TA turbocharger? I know that the engine itself is somewhere circa 160-190 degrees, but am assuming that the temp in the engine compartment above an un-jacketed turbocharger might be considerably higher?

Less than a 4 cycle but still very hot. Might be good to shoot it with a IR gun right at the top of a grade. We all remember 451°F? It sure is close to the bed. Some seem to come with a turbo blanket but ours did not. With a short engine like that, could have installed two turbos at the end like boats do in a lot of cases to get deck clearance and more torque a couple hundred rpm less..

But if you think it's close, check the generator exhaust pipe that melts the insulation and chars the plywood underneath it. Ours was just lying against the wall. On my ling list is to install a muffler on the back side of the generator diesel and then bring the exhaust pipe out without coming close to the back wall. I have a couple of photos that I will have to find.

I said to my Kenworth mechanic, That it might be interesting to mount a camera under the hood to record the turbo on the C15 Cat engine on a hill. I drove at night across Wyoming. He said do not do it.
Why? I asked. He said it will scare the heck out of you when it starts glowing cherry red on that hill.

I had flown a Cessna 421 numerous times but one night on one deadhead flight I sat in the back and saw the turbos glowing.  Scared me at first.  Gave a better concept of what was going on in the engine nacelles.
