Changing fuel filters on a 1997 8.3 Cummins

Ok, so I'm not home and get bad diesel somewhere and I need to change the spin on fuel filter at the engine and the cartridge canister, fuel-water separator filter by start batteries. What is the procedure to NOT get air in the fuel lines after changing and before starting? Incase this happens. So far it has not. or if I just want to do it myself at home. This is a mechanical fuel pump with the rubber manual push pump on the side.

The manual recommends that you pre-fill the filters before you install them. My personal experience with the same engine is that I'll do one filter at a time and start the engine after changing each filter. The only time I've had to prime with that black button on the lift pump was when I did them both at the same time. I've only done this three or four times so I am far from an expert like others on the forum. I choose to do it at every oil change and I use a fuel conditioner along with an anti-microbial additive. I also keep my tanks full and don't run below a half tank.

Never thought about changing both filters that way Patrick.. I change them both at the same time and pre fill and always have to pump the bulb and had to pump a second go around a couple weeks ago. I use a hammer handle from under the bed for a easier reach of the bulb. Expect some day to tear the rubber plunger so less pumping would prolong that from happening. I can bend that far but not without grunts. Goes to show sometimes the simplest things can go unthought off. Your way is sure worth a try.

I use the same procedure as Patrick, with one addition.  Because my coach has a air throttle, I run the engine before I change the first filter, to get air system pressure up.  That way, after I change the first filter, I can crank the engine and have immediate throttle control to allow a faster idle speed while the engine smooths out.  I do pre-fill the filters with clean fuel before installation.

I have never had a problem starting the engine after each filter change, and never had to use the hand pump.
