Steering Gearbox

Has anyone replaced the sector shaft seal on this style Sheppard M100. Can this bearing retainer be removed to replace the seal on this side without further disassemble?

Some years ago, we had that seal replaced by removing the bolts that you can see.  A year later the pitman shaft started to leak and Chalk Truck Parts in Houston rebuilt the box.  All fine since then.

1. Yes
2. Yes
3. Should be    Sheppard M100 Sector Shaft Seal ONLY | Qty. 2 | eBay As I have got some from these folks before. Check around for the best price though.

Looks like  maybe u don't need to pull the retainer.  Think I can almost see a part #.?
But probably as was previous stated, the other one is not far behind it.  My guess tapered bearings, so u might find some shims if U take that plate  off.  Make sure U get them all back in.
If u a re into such might put a dial indicator on the end of the shaft see what run out U get, the box Mfg probably has a spec.
A wild guess some where in the .004-.006 " ..
All the above being a guess, he could also shimming to center the sector on the worm.. as well as end play?

Rick,

I don't know why I didn't attach this to help you out. Read through it as it will give you the low down on what you are up against. I couldn't find the copy of this in the media section.

Thanks for the advice and experience. Spoke to Roy at RH Sheppard tech department. He reassured me I was making the correct repair. Told me to order the seal on Amazon and he gave me the part number. The seals sold on Amazon come directly from Sheppard.
I have finished the repair successfully.

If I might ask, how long did that job take once you had your new seal?

1 1/2 hours being my first time. It did take a 2 pound hammer and a long punch to drive it out. I found if I turned the bearing retainer with punch and hammer first,  the flange of the retainer extends beyond the gear housing which gives you a larger surface to work with.
