New-to-us coach - what do these switches do? (split from Re: New owner...)

Howdy Foretravel folks, we just bought our first RV, a 2003 U320, 38T #6197.

During my poking around, I came up with a few questions some of you seasoned veterans may be able to help shed some light on.  We'd appreciate any info or direction you can share.

  • There is a switch by the drivers leg that is unmarked.  When turned on, there is a LED light, but I don't see anything happening.  Picture attached.
  • In the bedroom there are two switches that don't seem to work.  The valence switch doesn't do anything.  I suspect these are for the 4 lights above the window as no switches make these turn on.  There is also a switch marked CAB that doesn't seem to do anything.
  • In the kitchen there is another switched marked valence that doesn't seem to do anything either.

Thought I'd go ahead and put the things I've found here:

5.a Yes
5b. This switch should operate the lights that are hid in the overhead cabinets in the bedroom.

You were right on the cabinet lights.  Apparently there is a ground issue though, as the cabinet lights, some light strips added inside the cabinets on door switches and the closet light are all not working.  I bumped the switches a few times and they came on, then back off again.  I've had the switch panel out, but it's a rats nest and looks to be power only.  There is power everywhere expected, so I'm thinking it's a ground somewhere.  I'll get to checking on that now that I know where to look.

Hi Keith and Faith, welcome to our community. You are starting out with a nice coach.

The switch in the driver's footwell looks like an add on.  Check for outside lights perhaps?

Valence lights are in the window valences at the top of the windows, hard to see unless it is dark. Accent lights are most often under the edges of counter tops of in the step well of cabinets, again hard to see in daylight.  The Cab switch should turn on lights in the bottoms of overhead cabinets.  If it is not working make sure the wires are connected at the back of the switch as a starting point.

Roger
Thanks Roger & Susan!

What we found is that the drivers' footwell switch seems to energize a system that interacts with the window shades.  Turning it on does nothing.  Turning it back off still does nothing (it's not a momentary).  When turned on the second time, again nothing, but when you turn it off the 2nd time, all of the window awnings come out the right amount of distance to shade the windows without blocking the view.  Then a few minutes later, they retract.  I'm not sure how, but clearly this is programmed.  I'll have to look into how/why it was programmed to do this, but I think the switch should be a momentary, like the hallway ceiling light.  I may look at swapping to a momentary in the future.

As mentioned above, I figured out the cab and valence lights, as they did work a few times today.  You were right about them...thank you!  As for the kitchen valence switch, there does appear to be a LED strip tucked under the lip of the countertop that doesn't work, so I'm guessing that switch controls those.  I'll get to those sometime soon too.

Keith, if I remember right, that coach came with 24vdc powered window shades operated by a multi function controller that was not working that well so he switched all the shades to 12VDC. I know when he owned it everything worked fine.

We have 6199, a close sibling of your coach so a lot should be similar.

On our coach there is a switch in the bedroom (with a key) that turns off the power to the awnings.  I wonder if your on-off switch does the same.  The awnings on ours go down to where the extension arms are horizontal and shut off.  Does your awning remote control function with that switch turned off?

Where in the bedroom is your key?  The only one I see is for the slide out control...but maybe I just haven't seen it yet.

It is on the wall.  I suspect it was added later but I don't know.  Ours has the east/west bed and it is on the wall above the "dresser."

To follow up, there is no key I can find besides the slide control.  Nothing further with the shades either.

We found that the light issue in the bedroom was a broken/loose fuse holder at the 12VDC panel under the bed.  We simply moved the circuit to an unused location and it all works fine now.

The valence light in the kitchen controls LED lights under the edge of the kitchen counters.  The wire connector had come off the back of the switch.  Tightened and reinstalled and all works.

Thanks guys!
