Has anyone added a right side "Down Mirror"?

I see modern trucks witha mirror over the door window pointed at the blind spot . Has anyone duped this ? Or just add the camera. ?

I've had those on a couple of big rigs I drove.  Like them a lot.  I thought about adding one to my U280 but decided I didn't want to make another spot for water ingress.  I added a rear facing camera on right front to monitor right side traffic when I'm in the "Monfort" lane.

I added a two inch stick on convex mirror to the bottom mirror. Not as good as a dedicated camera but an improvement.

OK Jack, I admit to being ignorant but not stupid.  I can figure which lane you are talking about so I am not stupid but I am ignorant of the term "Monfort" lane.  Please enlighten me.

Those trucks sometimes traveled over 100 mph. in that lane.

Was there, wish I had back half the miles spent there... of course the more angles of view you have to the right and down the better. Both of my FT's had 3 separate mirrors on the same mirror stalk and the bottom one covered that would be blind spot. I still added side cameras I guess because someone invented it. Truth be told I could have been safe enough with just the mirror but I won't go back to pre side camera days. It's a personal choice.

Pro,

If you contact Velvac and tell them what type mirror you have they have the "Top Hat" mirror hat fits your Ramco mirrors.  it will adjust to the spot you are trying to see. There are several models so the number for our '97 will be different than your '88.

We like our right side camera. Helps a lot.  I looked at the door mounted mirrors, I thought they looked straight down to see where the side of the truck was, I guess they could see a car there too although many big trucks have a lower window in the door.  Anything that adds visibility adds safety. All good.

Has anyone installed a right side camera with a monitor located near the right hand mirror? I would think a dedicated monitor would improve your scan speed without having to look to another location.  I like having my rear camera always on and aimed to provide me with a good comprehensive look back for lane changes that clearly show the toad clearing obstructions.

Patrick,

I do not yet have a right side camera but have thought of adding one.  I would not have thought of adding a monitor over near the right side mirror but I think that is an excellent suggestion.

It might have to be a fairly large monitor to see it well enough. My smaller monitor on the right side of the dash shows the right camera view as soon as the right turn signal is on. I glance at the monitor and then the mirrors. If I am changing lanes, I will double check the monitor.  The camera has a wide angle lens, adjustable aiming, and has night time infrared lights.

I can see both rearview and right side view in a split screen or switch to the right screen by pressing the appropriate button on the monitor. I don't much care for the split screen and don't want to spend much time poking at buttons so the turn signal method works well for me.

I just researched this, we have a camera that works MOST of the time but decided to go with a top hat mirror for when the
DW isn't with me to confirm whats over on that side.
Found this thread, hope the link works.
Had to call the company to order, part number is still good.

I have thought about these mirrors too and wondered what they do. So I asked a trucker at a rest stop about his passenger side door mounted downward looking mirror.  He said it pretty much looks straight down at the area next to the tractor, not so much to see the blind spot in the adjacent lane but for anything right next to his tractor.  It was aimed just about where the steps were.  I suppose they could be aimed anywhere you need them to be.

It would probably interfere with the awning more than I would like.

I added a 4x6 bubble mirror to the bottom section of the main mirror.  I can see the base of the awning leg and a little in front of it.  Much better  now.

I added one of the mirrors over the door top and would not be without it. I did this many years ago and have it pointing straight down to theground to show the white lines on road and how much room to curb etc I have. Simple addition and being all stainless is still in new condition. A  must have as far as I am concerned.
I just noticed John 44s comment on The Amsoil bypass filter which I also have on as previous owner had it installed. This also is a nice add on as the 2 micron filter gives another level of safety for engine. Just changed oil and filters so another new bypass one put in as well as main filter.

Hey John,

Here it is and a sketch of bracket that brings the mirror to the right position to see all that is reflected. I made this out of aluminum.
