Hi. Bill here. longtime lurker and recent Unicoach owner (more on that later). I've worked on a good bit of pex lines. Rarely (i.e. not so far) have I seen one split...even after a brief freeze. Pex will and can flex. Quest (polybutylene), however, will fail easily, esp as it ages.. But if it's pex, it's most likely the fitting which has failed. This I have seen happen with some routine. Oftentimes it's the cone seal inside the fitting. These are both quick swap new for old type repairs, just replace the fitting or the cone seal and it could save you replacing a supply line, especially at the water heater. It's easy to miss a failed cone seal when checking the fitting, but it's an easy thing to swap in elimination. Possibly too a crimp has failed. Just a thought.
