output speed sensor, allison

I have seen several recommendations for carrying an extra transmission output speed sensor.  I have looked on the forum and elsewhere, and have not come up with a part number for my 4060R.  Many on the 'net appear to be generic types and specify that they are not compatible with a retarder.

Someone have a part number?

I believe I found that number on the Allison website for my trans with the retarder.  It's been in for a year and a half with no issues.

Thanks for the update!  I will order one for my "spares" box.

Ted at TKT sales (allisontransmissionpart.com)  confirmed 29544139 is the correct sensor for a 4000 w/retarder.

He also said they only do commercial accounts now, so not a source for the sensor.

Thanks for the additional layer of confirmation.  people be aware that MANY of the generic imported parts that answer to that reference number specify "without retarder."  I don't know what the difference would be.

Was that for a on board spare, or to fix a issue?

My spare parts box is buried deep in a bay right now behind heavy tool boxes.

To fix an issue.  It was either that or a tag axle ABS sensor that was causing the torque converter to drop out of lockup.  We replaced both and the problem went away.

Art & Polly's post was a clue

Torque converter locking up and then unlocking at highway speeds.

To follow that rabbit trail, those speed sensors can cause transmission issues. I disabled our abs because of them doing it twice.

Will this sensor work with the 3060R transmission?

I believe it is different. I had issues with a speed sensor on a prevous coach with the 3060, but no longer have the documents on which  one it was (all maint docs went to buyer of coach)

Regarding the 3060, there are two speed sensors installed, one on the output shaft area, and one is specific for the retarder equipped trans.  They are not interchangeable.  The retarder sensor is easily identifiable, just tell your Allison dealer you want the $400.00 one.
