Identify Sensor

Hello,

Can anyone help me identify what this is? Appears to me to be a coolant sensor of some sort, and it is corroded and broken off. I'm having trouble starting my coach and thought this may be related, but I doubt it at this time. Located on the left side of the motor when facing it from the rear opening. Looks to be inserted into a coolant line. Cummins M11 on a 1996 U320.

thanks

That is one of the locations where they put a coolant sensor.  If that is a Celect M 11 then it could cause starting trouble as this goes through the ECM not just the dash gage. On our '97 this is the sensor number and should work 3085185 The big thing is the different plug types but it looks like your plug is shot too

Mike,

thanks for the quick reply. yes, this is a Celect M11. i have been having trouble starting recently, but now it just will do nothing. turn key, no attempt to even crank. the last time it cranked it cranked rather fast and i stopped because that sounded abnormal. then i saw for the first time the "stop engine" light. after this, nothing ever when i attempt to start. i thought i could bypass that sensor by bridging the two wires, but that has no effect. it looks like that sensor broke long ago, but i have no way of knowing. this sensor would cause a no start / no crank and "Stop engine" light?

That sensor should drop a flag in the ECM but not keep it from turning over. Look for the normal things bad grounds at battery, starter, bad start relay, or bad ignition switch.

On my 1996 U320 that casting in your picture definitely contains coolant.
There are two wires coming from that sensor, one goes to the alternator ground terminal, the other wire (white) is labeled B36.
No B36 (or 36) on my wire number list and no B36 on the 12v wiring diagrams but there is a "36" which leads to the switch for the  ether engine start assist. I bet that sensor is actually a switch which is closed when coolant is cold (ether start works) but open when coolant is warm (ether start wont work). This will mean your engine "no crank" is not caused by the broken wires and that your "ether start assist" does not work.

Wyatt,

thanks for this. interesting. i figured it probably had nothing to do with the start/crank issue. and i have never even tried to use ether assist, so i would never have noticed. both of the wires are black, so i have no white wire. i should be fixing this, but it is not as important at the moment if this is what this sensor really is. will this cause any issue aside from not having ether assist? and do you happen to know where i may find a replacement? if it goes directly to coolant i imaging coolant needs to be drained to replace this.

Maybe Cummins will have that senor and if you are quick you should be able to change the senor
without draining the coolant.

Note that both of the wires on my U320 are black at the sensor but one of the black wires is connected to the white B36 wire a few inches away, inside the protective cover.
