Foretravel 1993 U300 - Windscreen shifted

Hello,

Currently doing a roadtrip with my Foretravel U300 Unihome Grand Villa. One road was a bit too bumpy and now the windscreen on the driverside moved a bit (half an inch) to the left. So now i have a gap on the top side. I requested a quote from some RV windscreen repair guy but that one was asking $2500 for just removing and putting back in the winscreen. Is this too much?

I read some messages on the forum that it can be done by yourself, on a hot day with some suction cups. but I can't get any movement in the windscreen.

Any tips? Now located in Santa Cruz and moving towards Los Angeles and then Las Vegas.

Thanks!!

Sjoerd

Seems a bit high to me. I just had a new driver side glass put in our 240. I think the whole thing with the new glass was around $800. To charge 2500 to remove a windscreen and put it back in would make me keep shopping. I think  shops in Nacogdoches have a repair that adds strength to the front cap to help prevent this issue from happening. If it were me, I'd rather put 2500 towards adding structure. You could give Keith a call and see if he has a suggestion first.

The repair people are covering the risk of breakage. Hopefully someone can suggest a do it yourself solution.

You will want to check the structure below the windshield.  If water has dripped down (leak or condensation) it can rot the wood that is glassed to the front cap and gives it structural support.

Open the front "doors" in the nose and look up.

Thanks!  Since the bumpy road the RV hasn't seen rain. So no water leaks (yet).

1993 GV owner here.

Old seepage could have compromised the structure below the windshield. It can be cumulative over many years. I'd check even if you don't see anything wet currently.

If you wake to condensation inside on the windshield, that can cause the problem over time, down below. Good idea to wipe that off if it happens.

Definitely check that structure.

Edited to add: Check with your insurance company. Do you have windshield coverage? Even if you don't they may be able to find a repair shop for you.

And before the bumpy road, like in the past?
I've heard of windshields of motorhomes cracking, shifting and actually popping out on bumpy roads or when the frame gets torqued.

I would recommend an artful application of Gorilla tape for now and a trip to Nacogdoches to get the underlying structural problem resolved and windshield reset.

The structure might be fine. Maybe the 32 year old gasket just got tired and couldn't handle the bumpy road.

i checked the struckture, it's fine. No damage or water traces whatsoever. It's just the bumpy road.

Still looking for a company to fix it, most won't do it. But will try Bright Glass in Reno tomorrow.

Sjoerd..make sure you remove the locking strip that runs in the middle of the seal. I had the same issue last year (going thru Birmingham AL nasty  roads) and my glass guy took the" locking strip " out was able to get the window moved and the seal pulled back over. he then reinstalled the locking strip.

ps; I did a repair" post " a few  years ago where I reattached the dash to the front nose using "West System" epoxy.

When the weather is warm, I use a plastic car interior panel tool or glass tool, go under the rubber where it it no long is on each side of the glass and pry it back into position. I spray silicone all around the windshield between the glasl and rubber and then use a HF windshield suction cups to latch on to the glass and then slowly move it to where I want it. I don't glue it but let it move where it wants. I have not had to adjust it in about 5 years. The U300 creaks and groans when we go off road so I take it slow.

Might have to move the glass before you can pry the rubber back in position.

If you look at the seal there is a small indentation with 2 lines on it..that is the locking strip..pull it up !!

Found it! Now I understand! But how do you get that locking strip back in place?

You may have to cut it since it surrounds the entire seal...was not an issue for our coach. After the windshield is back in place reinstall the locking strip with windshield adhesive , that worked for us

Bought some tools, will try tonings or tomorrow to fix it.tried bright glass in Reno, they don't like to have any business. Might be me, but I really don't understand why they don't want to assist. Fast Glass in Reno is a good one, the guy Mark did help me a lot.

I will try to fix it myself. If I can't get it fixed he will do it for me, the only thing he needs is an approval if the glass breaks. So I'm not surprised about the costs.

Will post an update when I had the time to fix it!
