a/c in desert (re-post from yahoo group)

I'm debating having the roof air units serviced before the big trip out west.
They work fine here in frigid Florida (low 90's & humid)but I'm worried about
100+ (yeah...I know...it's a dry heat). I would think that since some of what
the a/c does is to remove moisture from the air, that ought to offset the higher
temps. I've never been out west and I'm wondering if anyone notices a
difference in the functioning of the a/c units. I'm having my dash air looked
at but I don't have much hope. I had it looked at at Lazydays last year when I
bought it but they couldn't find any leaks, only the flap that opens and closes
when you adjust for max cool but it never really worked regardless of their
messing with it. I did notice that once I got north of the mason dixon line
last year the output was noticeably cooler. The problem is probably due to
having been converted over to the new refridgerant in 94 or 95. There is a
faded sticker on it. I remember everyone who converted when it first came out
never had cold air again.

Hi Dwayne,  I had my 1994 out west twice 2009 & 2008, both times I spent considerable time in AZ temp. 100+  Roof A/C worked well as the lower humidity allows the evaporation process to work more efficiently. The Dash air from the engine did struggle to keep up, but when we found it necessary to travel in extreme heat we ran the generator to help cool the coach.Make sure the evaporator cores are clean in front of your fire wall and make sure the cooling fans engage. When parked be sure to use reflective window covers on ALL windows where the sun rays could radiate heat into your coach, also use 4" insulated vent inserts to help keep heat from entering from the roof vent. A shady site is the best way to assist your A/C in keeping the heat down, if parked in one spot for an extended period of time I would consider a temporary roof over (Canopy). The suns rays will still attack the plastic covers on your roof mounted vents, be sure to check them occasionally as I had my Refrigerator vent cover blow off while returning home to FL from AZ... P.S.  "Arizona Auto Air"  Tempe, AZ  converted my dash air too - 134A and it works as good or better now than it ever worked.  Gerry  1994 U300 Grand Villa UniHome..
