Clay-based brake grease

I had heard that the easiest place to purchase the clay-based grease used in the Meritor disk brakes is the parts dept at FOT but I considered this to be a challange to my Googleing skills.

I see the of the grease container is enough a couple of 45' motorhome, but what makes you think that the Shell Darina Grease would be ok for brakes?

Probably because it "is based on a non-melting bentonite clay thickener system. Due to the inert nature of the clay, this grease is suitable for applications where the lubricant is exposed to contaminants such as water and chemical".  But that does not tell me that it is what is required for the brakes.  I only know "clay based".  And I certainly would not want a drum or keg of the stuff!

Elliott,

My choice will be to let FOT lubricate the chassis and brakes on our coach. However, I can imagine some uses for the product that you found.

It appears to me that the product would be suitable for pickup trucks. It could be placed in the bed of the truck to keep the back end from sliding because of too little weight on the rear wheels.

Get a "four corner" weight measurement on your coach. If you have a spot with too little weight, you could store the grease there. However, it might be easier just to place your gold bullion in the appropriate place to balance the coach. Your heavy tools could be used as well as your gold bars.

Shell Darina is on the list of approved grease for our calipers. If you choose Meritor Part #A1779W283, FOT can supply it for $25 per tube +shipping. I purchased a tube from them a few weeks ago and due to the fact my calipers had been greased with the wrong "stuff" sometime in it's past, I used much more than normal making sure I had all the old "stuff" pushed out. Needing a second tube, I located another supplier that supplied my second tube for $12 +shipping. (contact Kenny in parts at Great Lakes Equipment, 800 634-0084) The tube I got from FOT was manufactured in 2009, last one in 2007. Not really fresh inventory at either place...

I think you are correct. I have decided that the $24/tube FOT parts sells it for might be a wiser choice than  $1,434.80 a drum.

I assume that Barry Brideau's table on the Air Brakes Lub page is listing product equivalences.

If I get even more bored I'll see if it is availiable in other containers.  :-X

Last time I had my brakes lubed, I copied the Meritor page showing various choices for clay-based lubricants and took it to my nearest truck parts store.  They had it for me the next day, and the cost was well under the FT price.

I bought 4 tubes at Cummins. They got a case and used two tubes to purge my brakes and then I kept two tubes.  It was not too expensive so I figured I would keep them and let them use the rest on fixing the other two FT that were in the shop.  THey purged all the brakes as they had put the wrong grease in when I told them I needed clay based.  RThey brought in the two other coaches and redid their brakes..
