Thanks to the instructions from  Barry & Cindy and the help from Patricia/George & John - we now have our new Sharp R-1871T in place and working!
Here are a few more photos.  However, other than the one hard-to-find screw ( ), we can't add anything to the instructions Barry & Cindy posted earlier.
Thanks all!
Grant & Betty

Yes, on the older models they sure hid those screws as it took me a while to figure out it was hiding behind the halogen plastic protection cover. That is why I told " foureye" to keep using them (eyes). His was in same place as mine.

We have our microwave/convention replacement scheduled for this weekend. This thread is VERY helpful! Quick follow up question.

Q) What type of screws should I use for the new mounting plate?  Metal? Self tapping? Wood? Length?

Are you going with another Sharp microwave? If so, there's a good chance you'll just be able to reuse the existing mounting plate.

Sorry this doesn't answer your question directly. You're likely not going to get a stud where you need it, much less multiple, for the mounting plate so you'll have a thin layer of wood (1/4"? need someone to confirm this) and then foam to work with. So it'll be a matter of quantity over quality. Much of the weight of the my microwave was actually held by long wood screws that went into the cabinets from above the front faceplate.

I used the new mounting plate but the old one would have worked just fine.  If you do use the new plate, try to use the old screws, in the same location as the old plate.

We found that the "1996/97" Sharp microwave used a different bracket system than the replacement Sharp we installed. We could not reuse the original metal bracket.

Seems that the internal wall space behind the microwave is probably a solid thick piece of wood, so the bracket can be securely mounted.

Sharp has the advantage of having door hinges not located at edge of microwave, allowing a better door opening when microwave is mounted flush to the left side wall.

Based on the model numbers and everything I am seeing from the threads, the existing and new mounting plates are different. I will try to use the same/similar screws from the original mounting plate.

On a positive note, we have already put the same Sharp convection/microwave in our stationary home kitchen so we've got experience putting in the new one.  ;D  It will also be nice to have the same unit in both places.

The new unit (Sharp R1874TY) does have two large screws in the TOP that go up into the cabinet above to hold it in place in addition to the mounting plate on the back. I have not seen that in the replacement threads.

When I replaced our Sharp microwave for a Samsung, I used the same plate on the wall and drilled new holes in the upper cabinets and inserted the holding bolts for the main weight of the microwave.  I have probably replaced well over 100 microwaves in my remolding years!  Been hanging there now for well over 2 years of travels and no issues.  Would I buy the Samsung again?  Yes and no.  I like some of the features and some I don't.  I tried to purchase the Advantium by GE, but could not locate any at any store.  Still can't, but it seems that Newell and the new Realms are installing these.  Would like to know where they are getting them.  I did check with FOT and was not willing to give the add on price they were wanting to charge for such.  Now, wish I had bite the bullet, as the Advantium, in my humble opinion, is the best of the best out there!  Let me know if anyone found one at a HD or Lowe's, as I have searched over many states.

Try ABT in the Chicago area. They deliver all over the USA and are a stocking dealer for many brands.
They have great prices and are fantastic to deal with.
Best prices come from calling and talking to a rep.

When we upgraded ours the new one required the new backing plate, it had lots of hole options, some lined up with the steel framework, reused the existing mounting screws. Drilled a couple new holes in the plate to match the old one. Lots of options. Sorry but I don't remember the exact size and type of screws, I just reused the old ones.

Multiple wood screws into the wall on the backplate should work fine as the majority of the weight is supported by the front bolts that go up into the cabinet above.

Hate to change out a perfectly good microwave now, but good to know.  Could not find any at the time and even with a call to GE, they stated out of stock and not sure when they would put in production again.  Thanks for the links!
