Ken and Dori were the first FT folk we met. I thought ours was prettty spiffy, but their coach is special!  ^.^d  I'd seen their coach when we pulled in, he came over to admire ours, and we got to talking so much, I left our parking lights on overnight!

Ken,
From the description and pictures, would make me want to check the turbo for dragging, stiff, not turning, air filter for sure.
A few facts, there is NO Waste Gate on your 6V-92, they do not need to be leakers, sloppy unless its has been maintained by a dumbass for mechanic. Also, the intercooler only gets clean filtered pressurized air, does not get the black soot exhaust.......
Detroit 2 Strokers are great engines, the turbo units run clean even with massive injectors.
Other things I would be looking at is the valve clearance .015-.016, I  do not know the DDEC , just the mechanical engines.
The engine should be running clean under load at speed.
New clamps would be nice.
Good luck.

Well.... took the coach to S&S and had them check it out. They found a couple of things.

1. Turbo took some impact damage somewhere along the line. (see pics)
2. Most of the exhaust leak was around the passenger side exhaust.
3. The exhaust flange was almost gone and couldn't get a good seal with it.
4. Black smoke could be from bad injector.

Estimates:
    New exhaust: $135 + shipping + labor
    Reliabilt turbo: $1600 + labor
Test injectors: 6 hours labor + parts if found defective + extra labor to repair

I opted for new exhaust. Coach does not smoke as much but still has some with full throttle. About the same as when I first got the coach. VMSpc now shows 20psi max at times instead of the 12psi I was getting before. Coach does seem to be back to its old self power wise.

Even with some impact damage the turbo seems to be putting out enough boost. Don't really have the budget to replace unless I can find a third party rebuild or take mine off and have rebuilt. In any event will need to be somewhere for a while before I can attempt which puts it out a couple of months. Looking for opinions here on whether I'm walking a tight rope by putting off the rebuild. Also looking for a replacement turbo anyone have a part number or can I go by the number on the turbo? AR.75 M24RC

Will probably do the injector test somewhere down the road too.

I know others will jump in who have more knowledge on this matter but to me that Turbo looks like it is loosing a lot of boost which affects fuel and heat. I would definitely look for another and you can change it out to reduce costs.

The bearings were okay? A slight imbalance at the speed those things spin might cause premature wear I would think. I think I would be saving my pennies to replace that bit... Would sleep better at night.

I did some googling around and found a few pictures of Garrett turbos and saw that there was a ID plate between the turbo vanes. Cleaned mine off and got a picture. Top number is p/n lower number is s/n.

Found this on ebay: Detroit Diesel R23503263 TV7512 Turbo LSX 96A R Garret 76mm turbocharger LS3...

Price is good. Says it new but it's a new reman. Not much info about the company. Think I'll keep looking.

Garrent turbos are good units, HOWEVER, we had a "re-built" installed (from a non-factory outlet) and she still smoked as much as me and my Kools. We limped it back to my main man in Seattle, who pulled the whole top end off:  I took the pump, injectors and head into town, all the above was fine, injectors needed cleaning, head had a loose valve adjustment, pump was fine. So, my buddy and I are staring at the now-opened top end ( you could have eaten off the jugs) and saying "WTF could be causing this?"  At the same time, we looked at each other and said, "BAD NEW TURBO?"  Yup, best we could figure, the turbo had sat on the shelf so long that the seals dried up!  Garrent sent me a "new turbo", but guess who paid for all the hassle & labor?  >:D
It could have been far worse: we were able to stay, plugged-in, at my pal's place. Imagine what fun it would have been at "Bubba's Discount RV Repair" ? Another plus (gasp) was I knew I had a fresh top end!

Ken,
My receipt for my rebuild shows:
(1) REBUILD GARRETT TURBO MODEL #TV7512
MODEL:  23503262
PARTS  $111.64
LABOR  $320
with tax and hzd waste the total was $450 (Jan 2008)
I was very happy with the results.  It was difficult to disconnect the exhaust outlet side of the turbo but every thing else was straight forward.  To me, rebuilding your original from a reputable shop is better than buying from eBay which I can only guess will have some level of risk to it.
Note: My engine is 300 HP so it might be a different turbo.  Attached is my engine sticker with the build listing so you can compare.
I would look for a well established turbo/fuel injection shop.  You might want to also ask them about your fuel injectors too.

This is only my opinion based on what I have seen in the field.  The pictured veins do not appear to be damaged from contact with the housing (usually the fins get more of a folded appearance). If the bearing play isn't excessive (there will be some the shaft actually floats in a film of pressurized oil) and no appearance of oil leaking from the shaft seals then no issue.  The wear in the fins appears to be more of an erosion issue (I have seen more damage from a zip tie). As long as you can get enough boost to meet spec the only real issue is overall age and that is up to you.  Your pictures don't scream panic and change it immediately but I would put it on the future plans.

I agree with the above post, not a must do now issue. I always rebuilt my own turbo's on my cat engines. They are actually very simple. Parts consist of bushings and spring loaded carbon seals. If the shaft doesn't have up and down play and isn't showing oil (which yours isn't) use it until the boost drops off.
