Rear ABS sensor install

Can the rear ABS sensor be installed with only the tires removed, or does the rotor have to come off also.
I'm trying to decide if this can be done when I have tires replaced or if I should arrange for a higher level of competence at say Coach Care or Josam.

My ABS light came on and stayed on 3 or 4 years ago. Last year I found one of the rear cables cut in half (likely a squirrel gift).

Dave, You might be able to replace that rear sensor with just the wheels off but it will be tough.  In the REAR that sensor is a 90 degree sensor, the STRAIGHT one will not fit. The sensor is hidden down behind the brake rotor and is affixed to the hub.  While you are in there clean off the serrated sensor wheel that is attached to the hub, it collects dirt and crap.  I gave up on the ABS a long time ago after spending countless hours trying to fix an obsolete system.
Have fun.

I assume to clean the sensor the rotor DOES have to come off...

Dave, To clean the serrated wheel get a can of brake cleaner and spry liberally. Watch your eyes.

With the ABS not working in our coach the trans retarder also didn't work.  I metered the sensors at the control box and found the right front sensor bad.  Replaced sensor and all is well.  Dave, if there is enough wire left, I would try to solder the leads back  together and meter out the sensor before I would pull the wheels.

Tried that. No luck. The coach is going in for a tire change anyway.

Interesting. I had a sensor go out a few years ago and my Retarder still worked.  I just did not have ABS brakes.

I think that different versions of ABS systems have been used over the years.  On my 95 the system was wired into the retarder, when ABS activated the retarder was inoperative.  And when the ABS was not performing the retarder was deactivated. I had to install a jumper in the control box to bypass the retarder circuit.  The system in mine was developed according the A rep that helped with me it for trucks in the UK and it was never very successful in the US.

Gary,  Where do you put the jumper for the ABS bypass.  Good to know when the time comes that the ABS is not repairable.

Tom, Here are the two documents that I have on file.  The wiring Diagram is what I used to find the connectors for the Retarder but after so long my brain has shut down and I can't remember what connectors were jumped

Michelle, You may want to add these to the files section.
