Possible Alternative Use for Sewer Hose Storage Compartment

The subject of the sewer hose storage compartment comes up from time to time. My overall impression is that most people do not use it to store their sewer hose.

I have considered a possible use that may be beneficial and wonder if anyone else has tried it.

When I installed my 50 amp connection, the outlet was mounted on a board mounted to the side of the garage. My RV pad is located adjacent to the walkway next to the garage. I back my RV into the yard, which places the door on the garage side.

Unfortunately, that places my shore link on the wrong side. My solution has been to pull the hose all the way out and push/pull it across the crushed rock to plug it into the socket. fortunately, it is long enough to reach without an extension cord.

While replacing the sewer valves, I happened to notice that the storage compartment door is very handy to the hose reel and the storage tube goes most of the way across the coach. It would seem to be extremely doable to feed the hose through the storage tube, with appropriate opening/extension. This eliminates the cord and its plug being dragged across the crushed rock. Additionally, it allows the cord to exit the bay without having to open the sewer door, which, in my case, has already broken from the coach settling on it lodged in the rocks.

Has anyone tried this? What do you think of the concept?

Thanks,

I think that it is better to store my sewer hose there.  I can count on two hands the number of times I have had to throw the cord under the coach and most of them have been at Xtreme.  Where will you put your sewer hose and that will also open up a path for critters to get inside the coach.

The far end of my sewer hose storage tube has a metal bar across it. It is the hanger at that end and keeps the hose from coming out.  Not enough room for your power cord to get out.  Even if there was you would still have to crawl under there to get at the end.

My drain hoses with fitting don't fit in the starage tube but my Valterra hoses compress and stay that way and have end caps.  Nice.  For the few times we have to run our cord under the coach I just tie a rope onto a cresent wrench and toss it under the coach  to the other side and then tie the rope to the cord and pull it over.  If it is muddy I will but a plastic bag over the cord end.  Easy and quick.  When I reel uo the hose or the cord I wipe it off as it winds up.  I would hate to see what is in the sewer hose storage tube.  I haven't discovered a new use for that tube yet.  Roger

John,

Right now, all of my miscellaneous sewer hoses, fittings, adapters, etc., are in a large rubbermaid container. It does a good job of controlling any remaining odors.

My big end will not fit around the sharp turn at the storage tube. I do have some excess 5" x 10' PVC posts that I could adapt and probably get them into, but I would want a straight entry, with a removable cover. Maybe there would be enough room starting at the engine battery bay??

I took a Dremal tool to the ridge on the connection so it will fit. I did it ten years ago and still use the same one.

Trent,
I never used the sewer storage pipe on my coach as it was hard to feed the hose in and out, plus the pipe came loose from the door fitting.  I removed it and put a cap over the round door hole to keep out water and dirt.  I may eventually remove the door and seal up the square hole.  I store my sewer hose in a plastic box kept in the sewer compartment.

A solution to your problem may be to add some additional shore power wiring to the other side of the coach with a connector on the far end and a plug on the end where it's now plugged in.  You could run this through the storage pipe or fasten the cable to a bulkhead with clamps.  If you use the sewer pipe, seal it so varmints can not get in.  Maybe the connector could be installed in a plastic cap on the end of the sewer pipe, or add more pipe if it isn't long enough.  I think that a good location for the right side connector  on my coach would be inside the battery compartment door behind the right rear wheel.  The shore power cable could be brought up from under the coach on the passenger side to the connector.  I might do that on mine as when I park in front of the house to load up for a trip I have to pull the cable under the coach.  Thanks for the idea.
