Shoreline reel RV-5036

We are trying to help out a fellow forum member with a repair of there older Shoreline power reel.  I have run out of spare parts for these reels and need a set of brushes.  Actually we need only one brush but will take anything we can find, like the whole brush assembly.  For those that are mechanical the brushes are .363" in diameter.  Yes we have both called Shoreline and sent text and these parts are not available.  I have also contacted 3 of my old carbon brush reps and these brushes are not available off the shelf but could be made for the right price. (no thanks)  Places like the RV salvage  yards don't scrap out this kind of part either. Here is a picture as to what we are looking for.  P/M me if you have a brush like we need in your junk pile.  Oh the collector ring cleaned up nicely where the arcing took place but the brush took most of the damage.

Do you know the original part number for them?
You could increase the length of the wire and use the rest of it up. Maybe get a larger diameter that is available and turn it down on a lathe. A lot of work but It would work.
Here are some 8mm if you could bush you holder down it might work.Just an idea

You could turn these down to fit.

@ Cman,

Those are the ones that we were looking at modifying if none of the OEM were available.  It would be a little trouble turning them down but doable.

@ stump,
Through your link we found another brush that we could use to turn down and use our spring and follower washer.

Are any numbers on the motor? Was it built by the manufacturer or sourced?

Could you hone out the holder for the larger diameter brush?

Chuck them in a drill and use emery paper.

Stump,

There is no motor involved. This is where the incoming power cable terminates and connects to the coach wiring. The power coming into the coach is transferred through this interface thus the reason not to extend or retract the reel during electrical use. The result of moving reel (extending or retracting the cable) during electric use can cause arcing at this point.  Here is a couple of pics after I cleaned up the collector ring so you can see more as to what we are working on.

Good idea but the brush holder is already minimum thickness to hold the brush straight and stable.

That is a really good "proper procedure" tip that I have never encountered on this Forum!

Do NOT move the cord reel with shore power connected!

I don't recall this ever coming up in our travels, but before I read this I wouldn't have thought twice about extending/retracting our power cord with shore power connected.  Always good to learn a way to AVOID causing myself trouble and grief!  8)

I think this depends on which reel you have.  I had the same concern so I called to ask Reelcraft about this before purchasing my reel.  They said it's not a problem.  Their reels are designed to handle it.  Others may be as well.  It's not very often that we ever have a reason to change the length of cord after plugging in but it's good information to know before doing it.  If in doubt, unplugging before moving the reel is always the safest option.

MORE good info!  We also have the ReelCraft power cord and water hose units.  I just assumed they were all basically the same inside.  So good to know that there is a difference in design.  Even so, I think I will cut power before moving the reel, IF the need ever arises.  Thanks for the tip!

I agree, better to have shore power OFF before operating the reel.  That way if one of the brushes does "jump" at all, it will not ARC which materially speeds up deterioration.
