Air Dryer Questions

According to this picture I take it that this is a Air Dryer Plus maybe?

In searching it looks like there are several supplies of the Air Dryer? Are they all the same quality?

Where might the model number be located on it. Its in a hard place to get a good view of all of it.

Your picture says it all, it is a pure air plus model which is standard on your coach. From the purge valve photo it appears your compressor is passing oil.

Thanks craneman, I see there are several models for the Pure Air Plus, is the model number in a standard location?

Is the air compressor on the engine rebuildable or is it cheaper to get a remanufactured one?

The Haldex reman. number for your Pure Air Plus is DA33100X some have a "BX"
Yes you can rebuild the compressor if you have the parts, tools, place. It will be cheeper to rebuild but and lot less work to buy a factory rebuilt one.

If you clean all that grease and dirt off the bottom of the dryer (bottom photo), you'll probably find a metal tag with the model number, which will probably be what Mike told you, cuz he's smart about this mechanical stuff.

Thanks Chuck, I forgot to measure the frame rails while I was there today so I can make some of the safety stands before I start crawling around under it by myself to much. I do have 20' of heavy wall 2" x 4" steel tube, a chop saw, and a mig welder

12" long safety stands work for every coach I've been around. With that size, on our coach, I have about 1/2" of clearance to insert the stand in the "tightest" gap. Some owners could get away with 13" stands, but the extra inch won't really make much difference in actual working room.

in the second pic, you will need to get or rebuild the square thing that has the air tubing going to it, I don't remember what it is called but I'm sure someone will chime in with it's name. some coaches have it some don't, mine didn't have it. I think it was 100 bucks for a new one.....

That will be your Haldex isolation valve. Here you go Isolation Valve - Haldex product category

If you check around they are on the net (like eBay) for ~$40 - $50.

Thanks Mike, in looking up that part number I see some that are brass and some that may be plated?

is one better than the other?

I personally like the brass ones. This isolation valve is in the discharge air off the compressor so it sees a lot of moisture due to the nature of compressed air. Being brass they seem to handle the moisture better. The plated ones will work just fine but I have found that they do have a tendency to corrode more when I have had them apart on the work bench.

One other thought: If you look at the link the schetch is mislabled. If you bring up the actual picture of the valve it is labled correctly. They have "A" & "D" swapped in the schetch.

Another perk for brass is the threads will seal better due to the softer metal.

Our dryer is up for service, I'm going with a re-man since I figure the cost is offset by the labor to rebuild one. Mine has been replaced, so I'm not worried about the horror stories I've heard about removing a original unit.

Mine looks to be in a awkward place but I think it will be easy to get at it from the bottom side once I build some stands to hold the body up.

I had a hell of a time even finding ours, it was so buried! I don't know if Brett used stands or not with ours.

Standing at the rear with the engine door open mine is on the right side on the front side of the frame member. The bracket holding it covers most of it from the view from the rear, its just in front of the mud flap

No concern for me, with a bad back and cataract surgery coming up, I'm not getting under there! "Little America" up in Flagstaff, AZ has a pit that will be easy money for them.

I hate to buy parts and have someone install them without making the percentage, but they said to go ahead and order it myself, no problem. They'll do all right with the fluid changes, anyway.
