If the level is below 1/2", I add water  (distilled) to bring it up to 1/2
I never have seen it above top mark, but would not remove water (now acid/water). Somethis else has happened to Battery!!
I also, once a year, use a hydrometer to check the specific gravity.

I presume you place the end with the two grooves on the top of the lead plates. Is this correct?
