Bob's trans. troubles

Had an "engine shutdown" light and buzzer come on yesterday on a west bound downhill after coming up from Denver.

VPMS passed 235 on the temp gauge and an engine shutdown light came on.  Not trans.  Seems wrong

Engine was at 205 or something.

Is it the combo of the trans and the engine temp?

Turned off the retarder and the engine shutdown light and buzzer went off in a very short time.  15 seconds?

Anyone else seen this?

Bob,

After reading your past post on how your trans. retarder operates compared to others you have several problems that need to be addressed to fix your troubles. You have at least  an interlock with the cruse control problem, at least 1 maybe 2 trans sensors bad, along with your recent cooling mods that may be catching up with you.

We had a similar problem this past summer.  $3500.00 fix.  The electronics on the transmission had to be replaced.  2 solenoid 's.  They were sticking open causing a major transmission and engine over heat due to the turbo on the engine bring fully engaged.  Fix the issue soon or you will have major damage.  We also had a bad wiring harness from the ECU and the transmission.  Big bill, but works like a charm now.  Be proactive vs reactive.  Small bill compared to a much, much larger bill.

Thanks for your repllies.  Coach runs normal.  No heating.  Mods have no electrical connection with engine or trans.

Trans/engine temp gauge read within 3-4 degrees of what they did before the fan controller swap.

All the other brands use the 199 degree fan control as far as I know.  This one was from beaver.

Only difference was the engine temp was at 205 from a hard climb then an immediate downhill with the retarder on its third position.

Did the exact down hill trans temp a month ago coming down from sequoia. And down the grapevine in ca.

Only difference was the engine temp was not elevated.

That does not mean,of course, that sensors cannot be bad, so I thank everyone for their experience.

Will check with my cummins shop forum when we get home.

After 25k miles using the coach fairly hard at time this was the only time I had elevated engine and trans from the retarder at the same time.

I think the two computers are tied together in this way.

Turned  off retarder buzzer and light went off immediately.

Used the retarder later without elevated engine temp and no buzzer at 235 just to test.

I assume every part in this coach is bad until proven otherwise. So any failure is expected in a way.

Rare spot after the Eisenhower tunnel westbound to have hard pulls up hill at high altitude then a steep downhill right after.

Probably a good safety item to warn the driver if both the engine and trans temps are medium hot.

Bet I never see this again.

Will use your info when I talk to my shop guy who is a dead pro.

Thank you again.

Matthew my 97 is a m11 not an ism and does not have a variable turbo.  Wish it did.  I would have to spend $15k or so to replace the top of the engine to have your high pressure fuel system and variable turbo.
