Yes, the inverter charger will charge the house batteries any time it receives 120 VAC.  So, plugged into shore power is exactly the same as running the generator.

The generator does not directly charge anything-- it just powers the inverter/charger.

Just had a similar problem, my MC-ARC control must have reset somehow, the AC input was disabled, set it to auto connect and all
is OK.

I have the same Lifeline batteries that you mention Holly and have had a de sulphater on each of them for at least 6 yrs or more. Mine seem to be in good shape but have not tested them individually yet as not had a load tester. I was given one a day ago by friend here in Mexico and it is in good shape so hope it does what it is supposed to do. It is a cheap Chicago Electric one or Harbour Freight,  and would love a carbon pile type but will give it a shot some time. My batteries were installed in March 2011 so are close to 9 yrs old and are charged by solar panels 100% of time.
I have been very happy with them.
You can equalise these with a charge of 15 volts and I have done that about 5 times in their life, but have the desulphaters working 24/7 and feel they are the reason for long life.

I have never heard of a desulphater before they look like the battery tenders we have on the motorcycles. Is that what they are?

John Zick, Desulfators and battery maintainers (Battery Tender) are two different devices.

Desulfators zap the battery with a periodic pluse of about 15 vdc to drive sulfate deposits on the battery plates back into solution.

Battery maintainers keep batteries at full charge when sitting unused for extended periods.

Hope this helps

Just to close this out the batteries are fine the inverter is toast. Ordered a Victron Multiplus from Bay Marine Supply got it all installed. Called Bay Marine once we got the computer hooked up to walk us through the settings. What a great vendor they are very helpful and even directed us away from purchasing extra that we don't really need at this time. Thanks to all of you for help with this I don't know what we do without this site.  ;D
