Matt, don't give up as they say you kiss a lot of frogs before you fine the princess!!  when we had our sob coach we had gone to Houston for brother in law to get lung transplant.  While we were there (I had been looking at PPL inventory on line) we went to PPL to look at a Beaver, I really liked the floor plan and could deal with cat engine (not my favorite just me) but when DW opened the door to go inside the mold/mildew was so strong it would take your breath. So we kept looking-- we purchased ours from original owner about a year later in Alexandria Louisiana.  It has had some problems, but overall we really like the coach.  I have had to learn to keep my mouth shut--look at someone else's SOB that is nearly new and think there is no comparison to our FT.
Chris
We drove to MOT from Tucson, expecting to drive that coach home.  There were a few really important questions I neglected to ask.
We left there feeling sad and pretty stupid.  We spent a couple of days in a hotel room, hitting the internet hard, calling and sending messages about coaches in Texas and New Mexico.  We were basically scanning all of the popular websites every couple of hours, and nearly doubled our budget to find something.

One dealer called back.  He had sold the FT on his lot, but he "knew this nice, old couple that was interested in selling."  He called them, they called me.  We were there as quick as we could - we were literally in the truck driving and changed direction.  We looked it over, looked them in the eyes, believed their story, and made a deal while we were there.  Picked it up the next banking day, and headed for home.

The plan was to be away for 4-5 days, and we were gone for eight.  Came home exhausted and smelly, but I think we got a good coach.  We have spent the last week cleaning, exploring, and stocking it.  I had to replace a run capacitor in the rear AC, a couple of the air bags are marginal (spare one already in the basement). and I will try to tackle the fuel lines in a couple of months.  Nice exterior paint, tile floor, Aqua Hot, headlight upgrade, newish tires, very nice interior, everything works!  We ended up spending $10K LESS than our original budget!  And this thing rides so nice!  And a simple, spacious floor plan.

Two things:
You can probably save a little money by not tearing up with joy, giggling, and raving about the proposed purchase in front of the sellers.
If you walk away happy with your purchase and everybody smiling, leaving that bit of money on the table is probably OK.  You might spend ten minutes of the rest of your life thinking about those dollars, but you might spend YEARS enjoying the right coach.

Matt, Glad you found the right for you coach--that is how we feel about ours--now the fun begins.  Also, remember there will be times you will think it is a money pit, lol, but that too will pass.

Thank you, amigo.  We have owned boats, so we know the score!

I still have a few years where I can do some pretty demanding labor.  Maybe I can get the big stuff done, and have smooth sailing when I get too old or too tired!

I walk through the coach, and it really feels like it is more house and less vehicle.  It seems like something that will hold much of its value if it is maintained.  We really loved our Monaco (RIP), but the FT feels different inside.  Some of it is size - a little wider and a couple of feet longer.  But there is a different feeling too.  A person can walk blindfolded into a garage and feel it is a garage.  We sense the infiltration of outside noise, a breeze from the loose construction, the inside reflections of sound, if the structure creaks in the wind.  When we walk into a house, it feels almost as if the structure gently supports us.  Quiet, secure, substantial.  Our FT feels like that to me.

I figured since I'm in nacogdoches anyway I might as well go see what motorhomes of Texas has for sale right? I looked at what they had up on the board and I I walked around going into various coaches from four travels to prevo to a country coach. Some of those things are monsters and I wouldn't want to drive them some of them were beat pretty bad. one to smell when I went in was so bad of mold and mildew I had to turn around and walk back out again. Well there was some really nice looking coaches in the end I came away with the fact that I'm happy with what I have and have no need to upgrade. Sure my coach is in perfect but it's perfect for me right now. the few things that really bother me about it are being addressed one by one and while I'm sure there will always be things that need addressing that's fine with me. I was really interested to see what a slide would do for the interior volume both in and out, and I was happy to see that my choice of no slide was correct for me. Also I really don't like the way the newer coaches are set up. They look like they're built for movie stars or millionaires, or people that are not like me.
so not really sure where I'm going with this other than to say that if you're sitting there wondering about maybe upgrading your coach think long and hard before you put down your money and take a hit on yours. If it's little things that can be fixed or repaired or bigger things that could be upgraded do if it makes you happy. If you have to have the newest and the greatest in the latest then we're on a different category and you won't understand where I'm coming from and I certainly wouldn't understand where you are. I was told before I bought this coach of mine that the 96 is through 2000s or 2001 for the best coaches made. And whether or not that's true or not I don't know for sure but I know that my 1999 is the best coach for me at least right now.
I'm sure there'll be a lot of opinions about this post. Go ahead and let me have it. I'm a big boy. If you really do want to trade your coach in though I would go to motorhomes of Texas before I would go somewhere else except for selling it myself on these forums. They do seem like they have a good operation and there's not any junk there. you can drive a little ways down the road to find that if you want.
I was at MOT Wednesday Thursday and a couple of hours Friday, and Xtreme over half a day Friday. wish I could have met anyone that was there. Today I'm out picking up cans on the side of the road trying to help my bank account after leaving nacogdoches with a vacuum in my wallet.

Keith, we all know that is your community service post parole.  :D  :D  :D

Yay to oldmattb for finding their new FT home!!  You are such a beautiful, descriptive writer.  Loved your words above describing walking through a garage and a home.  We feel the same way!!

And we think our coach is the best - a 1997 U-320 build number 5169!  It is the warmest feeling to look at all the coaches at MOT (or anywhere) and walk away feeling like you have the best coach for you.  ^.^d

Keith I'm sorry I missed you I don't hang out at Xtreme during the day. Up at 7:00 out by 8:00 not back until almost 5:00. During that time my coach is in the bays being repaired and there's no point in hanging around here. Usually you can find me at pecan acres Park either sitting in my car reading or eating or walking for hours and miles on the trails there. Then it's off to another Park in the afternoon for more the same. The motorhome of Texas trip was more because I was bored of sitting in my car and thought what the heck why not I'm here let's go take a look. When I walked into the door nice lady at the front said can I help you and I said probably not! But I'm just here to kick some tires while my coach is repaired. They were really okay with that which is smart on their part cuz you never know when I may be back looking.
Yeah he definitely do spend some money here and I'm hoping that it's money well spent. Time will tell. I really do believe though that the best way to get a good coach is to buy from someone who's well loved it for years. They may have an inflated sense of what it's worth and you may have to deal with that but other than that in my opinion it's the way to go. Motorhomes of Texas would be my second option and other RV dealers at distant last. It's like that with anything and especially boats. And boats and RVs are so much alike after owning both. They have different issues for sure but there are a lot of like too.

On a side note for everybody who's thinking about coming to Xtreme at some point to get work done on their coach, these guys work really hard they're here at 7:00 and sometimes not out of here till 6:00 p.m. at night but they are closed on Saturdays and Sundays so just be prepared for that.

Bob, I have to agree with you, when we drove away from the previous owners home in Alexandria LA. the older couple were standing in the drive waving to us and the lady was crying watching her beloved coach drive away.  He told me he had bought the coach new when he was 65 and he was just about to turn 85.  I have no reason to believe that if I am still able to go it will last us until I turn 85

I agree with you Chris.  Our coach was a One Owner Retired Pilot who cared for it just like an airplane. He just got to the age where he felt he couldn't handle it anymore.  He had every record of service and receipts for everything he put on the coach, down to a tailight bulb replacement.

We've had the coach for 2 years and I am still in contact with him.  He remembers every thing he did to the coach and is a wealth of information for me.  We love out FT.

Keith, what all did you end up getting done ?  Did you have to replace your slide bladder ?

5 or 6 years ago MOT I believe it was had a 88 ORED GV, it was a time capsule. It had blue trim and less than 20k miles on the clock, everything that came with it new was there. The blurb said " maintained with an open check book " and the photo's reflected it. $27,000 and in my mind worth every cent.

The 39k mile 88 URED I just bought is similar, the seller/previous owner is a car collector/restorer and frequent judge at Amelia Island events...he was the second owner, and both he and the original owner kept it inside stored its entire life and neither were strapped for cash so it got what it needed...he installed new tires of my choosing as part of the deal; I feel like the $24.5k I spent was an absolute bargain. I prefer the narrow body fitment on the road, particularly when there's construction going on.

Yes , the gorilla tape I borrowed from you got me home but it was time to get the bladder replaced. Also the water line to the ice maker and some air leaks.  Remember how I would lean to the curb side after a couple of days? Bad o-ring on a rear 6 pack solenoid and pressure switch. So far so good except for a vacuum on my wallet.

Fun thread.  We stopped at MOT and FOT on Saturday as we were driving our "new to us" 2004 Chinook Glacier back to Houston (that's another story) because I had never been there and wanted to compare our 1996 U295 to what was available there.  Well, let's just say we walked away feeling like our '96 is in much better condition that anything we saw there (in the same age range).

We did have the chance to go inside a Newell, which was a first for us.  Wow.  What build quality.  It was some race car team's coach, so it had triple bunks in the middle of the coach, and a bunch of slides.  Downside: you could hardly move around in there with all the slides in.  I would be claustrophobic while under way.  But impressive nonetheless.

We purchased our 1st FT, at MOT this past August. They were selling rigs like crazy. We were happy to land a 2013 iH-45. Our salesmen said they were traveling all over the USA trying to locate coaches. They were getting wiped out.
