Peter,
1. No. that is how your system was when it came from the factory.
2. What are you asking about doing it's job?
3. You can if you want, but $ spent will net little reward.
4. Well it isn't full of moisture/water so it must be working. That is just a moisture separator with an automatic drain valve on the bottom. When the compressor is running the valve is closed and when the compressor shuts down the valve opens. This function causes any moisture that has been trapped to be drained/blown out and ready for the next compressor cycle.
4a. Now to answer your next questions
 Yes that drains into the basement rather than to an outside area.
 I have never added a drainpipe to the outside.
Working properly it will be just a mist that comes out, so again $ verses reward.

Look at photo and reply number 7i f you look at my automatic drain I did a temporary hole right through the vent hose and run it to the bottom of the coach outside, I've never heard anyone complain that my compressor air is too dry especially in a high humidity place like Texas I'm using kitty litter which is much cheaper 100% silica

Thanks for all the comments  also I still have not found the inline fuse from the power on it!  I am assuming there isn't one

I have the same system as Lt403 and was looking at this last night.  Is there a check valve in the desiccant head or 2nd filter?  When the purge valve dumps the air pressure after the pump stops, there is still pressure beyond the 2nd filter to the gauge and regulator, so there must be one in there somewhere.

The fitting coming out of your filter is a check valve. Allows to dump water from filter with little pressure loss

Thanks Scott.  I think I'm going to buy the same regulator you referred to.  This seller looks to have the same unit, but much more sales with positive feedback (484 vs 15 reviews), and even gives the replacement filter numbers.  Made in Taiwan and assembled in the USA:  3 STAGE, HEAVY DUTY INDUSTRIAL GRADE FILTER REGULATOR COALESCING DESICCANT DRYER SYSTEM

I'll just put a check valve at the end of this setup.

Fighting leaks in the Coach... The first big problem, Desiccant filter assembly is leaking significantly at the base... Looks like the desiccant filter base is corroded, the o-rings are very suspect too...

Looks like the Parker OEM Dessicant filter assembly is about 1-2 weeks out and the Wilkerson X0602000 the same. So, I'm thinking, simply to order the 3 stage dryer system Scott posted, replace the stack.

Question: is there any value in getting the one that's listed with the auto purge? Thinking it would keep the compressor unloaded when it shuts off, plus purge? Not sure if I can use the existing switch that puts 12v on the OEM valve to close it when the Thomas  compressor turns on.

Yes I retained the auto purge feature. Just think its simple and works. Have something similar  on my shop air that opens for a second every forty five minutes

Thanks Scott, good point. Curious how you retained the auto-purge?

So, would you suggest ordering the 3 stage stack with manual purge device, then integrating the existing purge valve to the first filter at the bottom, looks like a threaded fitting? Or, worse case adding the new 3 stage stack after first existing filter? Can't find definitive specs on the bottom thread of the three stage filter stack.

Well I kinda cheated and made up a adapter on the lathe. Actually never gave it a thought, just made it.
So the air leaves the compressor and goes threw the first filter with the auto drain in the bottom. There is a check valve as it leaves the filter so only that air is vented when power is shut off.
