radiator fan

When I had the pump replaced on my trip, the tech noticed some seepage from the fan itself.  A friend of Gary named Thomas emailed me about this pump as he is having some leakage.  He told me that he contacted the factory and they have the pump in stock for his 95 U280 but that the fan motor itself is not rebuildable and replacement is $2000.  I am in shock.  If this is so I regret replacing the pump.  The entire thing should be converted over to electric fan at a fraction of this cost.  It is just unbelievable that a simple pump and fan motor should cost $3000 plus labor half again that much.  Something doesn't smell right at this point.  I work for a company that operates state of the art 5000 hp diesel equipment and I know that a simple hydraulic pump and fan motor costing 5 grand to replace is laughable.

Dwayne,

Forget an electric fan.  A side radiator cooling fan can take upwards of 25 HP.  NO way to fit a large enough alternator to supply that kind of power.

And before concluding the fan motor is not rebuildable (resealable), contact the fan motor manufacturer for a list of their dealers who rebuild hydraulic units.  As an alternate, just contact hydraulic shops in your area and let them know the motor manufacturer and model.

Also, as mentioned in your earlier thread, VERIFY regulated PSI.  Unless you are driving in mountains, 1500 PSI @ 2500 RPM should be plenty adequate (I am running 800 PSI on mine right now-- was running 1500 in the mountains).  Max permissible on the system is 2200 PSI at governed redline. Higher PSI results in more HP drain and more likelihood of leaking seals.
