Dash Computer

We have used the VMSpc since we have had our coach.  We started out with laptop balanced on the drivers table.  I enjoyed it so much that I decided to build it into the coach.  This is my interpretation of Jack Frohbieter computer dashboard.  More information on his version, here:  http://www.silverleafelectronics.com/?q=node/98

I have used the setup for some time now and really enjoy it.

The computer is built into a small existing cabinet that is behind the drivers seat.  The computer is HP Pavilion Slimline S3100N.  AMD Althon 64 x2 Dual Core Processor 4000+, 2.10 GH with 1 GB RAM, Vista Home Premium. I selected this computer because it was very powerful and small enough to fit inside of this unused cabinet.

I installed a small uninterruptible power supply that sits beside the cabinet and under the drivers seat.  The inverter in our coach powers the computer and LCD display.  The power supply filters the incoming power to protect against electrical spikes and powers the computer and monitor during that brief switch over from shore power to inverter power.  I did have to install a fan in the cabinet, because it just got too hot inside.

I removed the modem that was supplied with the computer and replaced it with a ½ height serial COM port so that the VMSpc interfaces directly with the computer.  No serial to USB adaptor is necessary.  Works great every time.

I use the 'corded' keyboard that came with the laptop.  I just put the keyboard on the steering wheel (when I am stopped).  When I drive I lay the keyboard on the side of the dash.  I have not found a way to have keyboard as I drive.

The 'track ball' mouse sits on the flip up table that was already in our motorhome.  I made another top that was a little larger with a spot for the mouse.  I found vinyl for the top that (almost) exactly matches the existing.  The mouse is wireless and the transmitter is attached to the bottom of the table with Velcro almost under the mouse.  The mouse works pretty well.    I can use it safely while I drive.

The monitor is LCD and is 19" in size and is 16x9 (widescreen) size.  It is attached to the dashboard on swivel arm.

I can see the passenger side mirror just fine.  Photo attached is a pretty good approximation of my view.

I added color backup camera as the built in b/w camera was unusable.  I run the display in a window in the lower right side.  If you double click on the window, the view expands to fill the entire monitor.

All of the wires go through the dashboard, then through the console beside the driver seat.  The puck for the Delorme GPS sticks out and lies on the dashboard in front of the driver.

The computer ties into our in coach network to access the Internet via our Verizon aircard.

Sound card interfaces directly with radio.  I hear the computer through the radio speakers.  Bonus.... All of my MP3 music is on the computer, which will play through the radio.

I run Delorme in a window on the left and VMSpc in a window on the right.  You can see the layout that I use below.  This is all programmable, so can be easily changed.

The unmarked readouts on the top (left) is transmission gear display and the (right) is rolling MPG (the most important readout these days)

I have used the system so much, that I can just glance at it to see exactly where I am, where I am going and how coach is performing.

Howdy Roger,  You may recall that I looked at you system out in Yuma last winter,  and I'm basically trying immulate that setup.  I have my laptop mounted on a swivel system to the right of drivers cockpit, and I too have great visiblity.  Currently, I'm just using GPS software and thinking hard on installing the VMSpc/ with PressurePro option to go along with the GPS.  Getting some great responses from PressurePro reps, so I may get froggy on this, and jump in.
