Help! Javelina and/Or Monitor Problems

This is in a 2003 U-270, and I have owned it only since March of this year.  The 2U9 system is an Emerson ("pop up") 7" TFT LCD and a Javelina Computer.

The first sign of problems was that, when set to display tank levels, the picture was jagged multi-color squares, sort of like large pixels, and was not useable/viewable.  With the Javelina computer box taken out, and the monitor reconnected, I had a good rear view picture, but of course, no tank information.

The Javelina box was sent to the Javelina Company who reported that they ran it "on a bench" for two weeks and it never faulted.  It got re-installed and it then worked fine, both rear picture/camera, and tank levels; that is worked until yesterday (one month later).

I had reinstalled my Pressure Pro system yesterday, and turned on the monitor to see if there was any real estate left on the dash (with the monitor screen "out and up") where I might mount the PP monitor.

The Audit monitor was crazy! I now have rapid rolling of the picture, like the vertical hold gone crazy on an old analog CRT set, and this "rolling" continues on either input, i.e., tank levels or camera.  Because the rolling is the same on either input (tanks or camera), I suspect the fault may be in the monitor, not in the Javelina box/computer.

Some of you have replaced your monitor - Barry previously posted that he switched to a Model 70-LCD-BLK 7" Dash monitor.  Will this work if the Javelina "box" is still good?  Or will this only restore/display the camera function?

If the tank information is lost in a "Javelina Divorce", what will work for the tank info?

Any thoughts or ideas?

You should be able to use any monitor that will accept 2 video feeds.
One for the camera & one for the tanks.
The Javalina feeds the tank information thru a yellow RCA Video connection and a second video connection for the camera.

Thats a whole nother problem.
If the Audit is gone than you need a new tank monitoring system with new tank sensors for that system.

For what it's worth, Previous owners had complained to FT about the same sort of problem.  FT diagnosis was that the battery was low.

Thanks, Barry!

And Gayland, my house circuit voltages were initially on the "high" side, but stabilized at 13.4 (Emerson Monitor), 13.5 (Dash Outlet), 13.4 (Prosine), and 12.88 at the chassis batteries per a Fluke VOM.

Thanks to all!

And to add today's update -

Lori at Javelina said a) strong suspicion that the problem is in the monitor, not in the Javelina Computer, agreeing with my logic that if I can identify both the camera view and the tank data through the rolling bars in the picture, that indicates the source of the display(s) is functional; b) cautioned to always kill all battery power, House and Engine/Chassis, whenever installing or uninstalling the Computer because of sensitivity to voltage spikes; c) she can't comment on my Emerson Monitor because that is not the Monitor Foretravel originally specified.

Installer Guy at Best Buy: he also suspects the monitor (age) and troubles in the voltage supply (common).

I have decided to not throw more time and $$ after a 7-8 year-old piece of electronics, and instead pursue a complete change-out; don't know yet what that will be but could mean having to have two different monitors.

Any and all ideas are welcome!!

If you're going to DIY the change, and have not yet seen the You Tube video of Greg's (mrosmosis) instructions, do it!  If I ever need help selecting the right video display, that's whom I'll be talking to.  I don't think the Javelina computer is bad, either.

Dan,
I replaced the original radio & the flip up tank monitor.
I now have 2 flip up monitors with with built in radio, DVD etc & infinite capabilities.
I wanted to see my GPS on one monitor & the rear view camera/tank monitors on the other.
But now I have additional inputs & I can connect Sirius radio, iPod, TV etc.
I run the inputs thru a "Y" connector to both monitors so if one goes out I have the ability to see any input on either monitor.
And for kicks I have the some of the devices running up to the TV in case my wife wants to see the GPS or the rear view monitor.

All you are going to need is to replace your flip up monitor & plug in the 2 video feeds from your javalina & you should be done.
I am just mentioning this to show some possibilities in case you might want to get a better monitor for additional future needs.

I don't think Dan has this type built in monitor. The 2003 had a flip up monitor like mine below.
Very easy replacement just like changing a radio.

Barry, you are correct.

My dash has a "Double-DIN" size hole where an older CRT monitor resided originally, somewhere in the past.  That hole is covered with a metal plate which has a single-DIN size cutout for my Emerson box which is an AM/FM/CD/DVD/Video unit which has never been hooked up with anything other than two video feeds, one from the camera and one from the Javelina Computer.

Peter, my dash looks like Barry's did before his "modest" revisions (WOW!)

I had the Emerson box out of the dash today and took it with me to talk with the Best Buy Installer.  I think I'll pull it out again and go shopping tomorrow!!

And OBTW - we are scheduled to depart next Monday on a 1-2 week trip to Colorado and I sure do want to have at least a functional rear camera!

In a pinch, You can always run that video feed up to one of the inputs on the TV and really see some traffic  :o

I tried that yesterday without success, and have a couple of problems (maybe more) - 1) can't get good access to the back of the TV; selected AV2 (which came up on "Source" (same as "Input"); three RCA input plugs for AV2 on the back f the TV and tried them all with an extension patch cord from the Camera RCA plug down in the dash wiring bundle; 2) still not real familiar or fluent with all the connections available on the back of the TV set (slow learner).

I'll try a couple more variations of that later today.

The video input will be yellow. The other 2 will be for your audio which you are not needing.
You can try plugging in a video camcorder to find the right "source" on the TV.

I see the Alpine D-310, but what is your "other" monitor - the one used for cameras and (I assume) the Javelina Audit?
Thanks!

"Two" radio (single-slots) or did you replace something for the 2nd display? Looks very nice!

I originally had a radio in the left slot with no monitor.
I took it out and put in the Alpine Flip up monitor with radio dvd etc.
Then I replaced the monitor on the right side which was existing with a better one.
You can see it on the photos on my original message

I actually did look at your pictures but didn't connect that your original monitor was (apparently) a flip-up unit. We need to upgrade what we have (original Jav/Audit/CRT) but the projects continues to reside on the "list".
Thanks!

Barry -

One point I'm not clear on: are you using the Javelina/Audit system for your tank information or did you install some other system (like the SensaTank)?  If so, which of your two "radios" will display it?

I was able to get the my camera picture through my overhead Samsung 36" HD TV (what a Picture!!) but the TV set will not accept or display the output from the Javelina Computer; my TV gives me a message "Mode Not Supported".

This afternoon I will see if I can find that error message in the Samsung Manual!

I am using my javalina because it still works.

I can actually see it on both but normally I view it on the same one as the camera.
If I take that yellow video cord output from the javalina & put it to a splitter (1 input - 2 output) patch cord, I can run it to both monitors.
I did that for redundancy as my original rear view monitor was replaced 4 times because it stopped working.
Fortunately 3 times under warranty.
Both monitors are TOUCH Screen now. Touch menu screen to choose input.

That really surprises me as it is just a video output source.

Mid-afternoon Wednesday update:

Refused to be intimidated or dominated by a piece of dumb electronic equipment; re-rigged everything and no change; in frustration, repeatedly switched the Suspect Monitor throug setting of PAL, NTSC, AV1 and AV2, and suddenly everything worked!! Back to normal and the Status Quo!!

Well, that takes the pressure off, but I clearly need to replace that monitor!!

Thanks to all for interest and concern.
