Question on tire valves on outer rear tires.

Before I make a mistake I will raise the question here.

We use Pressure Pro TPMS and on the outside rear tires it is really difficult to remove the sensor without dropping it and equally as difficult to put it back on.

So here is my question:  is there any reason why I should not have those valve stems rotated 180 degrees so that I can more readily remove and install the sensor?

George,

When I changed tires, I did that very thing:  I asked the tire mechanic if there was any reason why the angled stem couldn't face outward instead of inward.  He said it wouldn't be a problem; it just wouldn't look "streamlined".  I could care less about appearance.  I have had the stems turned out for 4 years with no issues whatsoever.

Great question George. I have wondered that for a long time. Why make life more difficult.

Don, thanks for your answer.

Don,

Thank you.  We will be making that change soon.

George,
Another possibility is what I did, install a valve stem that is a couple inches shorter.  That way it still points inward, but makes installing the TPM monitoring modules much easier.  We use the Pressure Pro and they go on and off in a breeze.

And we also had the outers  turned around with the last tire change.  Makes it a whole lot easier to fill tires.  I never did drop a sensor between the tires, but I was always expecting to.

Didn't think about getting shorter stems, but that's an excellent idea.  Gotta put that one on the list for the next tire change (hopefully no sooner than 2017...)

When we put new tires on the rear axle a few months ago on our 99 U320 I had them turn the things 90 degrees....  seems to be OK so far......

Outside tire valve cannot be rotated without hitting 'hump' in wheel. Bending them to clear the 'hump' can cause them to break. Much better to choose a new metal valve that is shorter and has a good angle to face out.

Wow Barry,

I must have strange valve stems as when my outer stems were pivoted around, you can stick your fist between the stem and the hump.

Mine work fine and sure are easier to air up and put the pressure sensor on.
