replace microwave oven

We have our original Sharp Carousel Convection oven model R-1830B.

Convection pre-heat keeps on heating after reaching temperature setting.  Assume a temperature sensor is not working.

1)  Anyone find a new microwave convection oven that will fit into our existing space?  Our oven is 30" wide and that's all the space available for a new unit.

2) Anyone have a wiring diagram or repair manual on this unit?

Our answer to your question #1:

The WH in the model code stands for white finish.  It is readily available in black as well

This is a superior microwave as you will see by the price.  But if your family needs an oven, this will do a great job of baking or speed cooking of food.  My wife is a serious baker and makes great scones and cookies and coffee cakes in this oven. She is not know as Cookie Queen for nothing.

We had a similar model in our sticks and bricks and in a total of about 8 years, we have not had a single problem with these GE models.

I also have a Sharp 1830B in my 96 U320 which seems to require about 10 minutes to preheat. It does stop preheating and start oven operation eventually. It also seems to take as long as a conventional oven to bake things.
How long should preheat require at 400F?

Not sure about 400, but I do pizza and hearth breads at 450 every week.  I generally see 20-25 minutes to get to 450 for the 1870 in our coach.

Mmmm! I think I need a demonstration.

We plan to be hauling a.., er, coach through Denton on September 14, on the way to MO, to visit the grandchildren (and their parents). We could pause long enough to collect some hot bread.  ;D

Seriously, perhaps we should check out the convection oven function. We have only used the microwave. Until a recent review of the manual, I didn't know the oven was more than a microwave.

Our convection oven used to work like yours.  The higher the chosen temp, the longer it takes.  It would take about 10 minutes to reach 400. This week, the pre-heat segment does not switch anymore to let us know it has reached the chosen temp.  It just keeps on heating.

Does anyone know how the Sharp microwave is held in place and what it takes to remove, other than two people?
I know a wall plate is somehow mounted, but not sure of how oven is firmly held to wall plate and cabinet.

Our 2003 U295 3610 has a Sharp model R-1870 microwave/convection oven (label states an August 2002 manufacture date).  I found the 8-page installation manual for it online, and page 7 has a good explanation of how it's mounted.  I'm attaching a copy of the PDF.  I looked the Sharp website, and there are no manuals for the R-1830b model, unfortunately.  But I think the PDF for the R-1870 will give you a good idea.

Looks like Figure 1 shows the microwave as being 15 inches wide.  How could that be?

That's exactly what thought... a typo (reversed dimensions)... when I first saw the illustration, too (see attached image).

I was more interested in the different options for venting the oven (ie, the fan and exhaust assembly), which is why I originally downloaded the manual.  See my other thread on the venting problem (http://www.foreforums.com/index.php?topic=10135.msg46500#msg46500).

thanks Pat for the installation manual page 8 idea.

I had read that our older unit has a couple of knobs at bottom back that keep the oven to the backplate.
Then I read that there are two long bolts that go in at front vent to hold oven to back plate.

But both of those attachments must not be correct as the install instructions notes that shorter bolts going down from cabinet above hold oven in place while it is sitting on the backplate lip.

Awwww, you've piqued my curiosity.  So, a little more Googling produced a thread on the topic of removing a Sharp R-1830:  http://tinyurl.com/33tsgmh

If the link doesn't work, I've cut-and-pasted a couple of salient comments below from the thread:

--from the query:  "I can't find any screws that attach it to the back plate. Just the 2 on top."

--from the responder (a home appliance tech):  "At the top of the unit there should be a grill plate remove it.  In there there should be some tabs on the bracket arms bend them out of the way it should slide out."

I'm thinking the "it should slide out" comment might be a bit of an understatement... my R-1870 weighs 71 lbs (per the Sharp website), so being prepared to "catch" this baby as it "slides out" of the bracket and into waiting arms might present a real challenge!  :o

Anyway, I hope this clarifies a bit more...

One way to remove the Sharp Microwave from the wall is to be T-Boned by a truck, my microwave bounced off the stove top as the wall caved in.  I DO NOT RECOMMEND this method.  85 ORED was a total but no one was hurt except my ego as I loved that coach.
Really, after this I found with the upper grill removed there were two screws into the wall that held it up, it then could be pulled forward ( by two strong men ) and removed. There should be in the owners packet the installation instructions that include a template for drilling mounting holes .

Just a note of warning here. I replaced the Sharp Carousel in our U295, and there's some things to be taken into consideration. Our micro fits flush up against the fridge to the left (as you face it), which is the side the door is hinged on. MAKE SURE the replacement micro is hinged on the front edge of the door, so the door does not move laterally as you open it, or else you'll get the new one completely installed, be admiring your work, go to open the door, and to your horror, realize it only opens a fraction of an inch! DON"T ASK!!

I won't ask, but you have our sympathy . . .  Looks like another reason to replace Sharp convection with another Sharp convection as they seem to not have made many design changes over the years to their line of over-range microwave units.

I replaced the microwave convection oven in our 98 a couple of years
ago with a sharp , model number r1874f
it had the exact same measurements as the old one, and I did
not have to change the mounting plate.
I believe the f indicates that it has the stainless steel face.
the exhaust has to be turned before installing.

Want to let everyone know we finally figured out how to remove our microwave from the wall.
And then we replaced a broken thermistor and now we can bake a pizza again in our motorhome.
