Purpose of brass grommet holes in awning

There are three holes in the awning on my 96 U320, near the outer roller when the awning is open. One is in the center and the others are about 2 feet away.
The holes are reinforced with brass grommets so I know they were installed for a purpose.

What are they for?

There should be no such thing as holes with grommets in the awning.  Sounds like the previous owner made these openings for drainage at a low point?  Can't think of any other reason for these other than to prevent a hole from becoming larger.

my awning has the same grommet holes.  I have always assumed they were for drainage.

As did my '99 U 320 with a Zip Dee patio awning. They are for drainage of rainwater that does collect inboard of the roller unless the awning is seriously tilted during a downpour.

These 3 grommets are also in our awning and they were made by the previous  owner for drainage.

My awning also has the three grommets and I am sure they are factory installed for drainage.... ;)

Ditto.  Three grommets on an original ZipDee.  Assumed for drainage also.

Ours too!  They are for drainage.  Great thing if you forget to tilt the awning and it rains.

Checked our Zip Dee. . .no grommets.  However, "The Burrow" does have new awnings installed by the previous owner; so I guess Zip Dee had stopped doing grommets.  I always use the tilt bracket (usually the front one) when I put out the awning.  We are still near the Lake Michigan shore, and rain squalls are frequent.

Now I feel bad, my 95 does not have grommets, maybe newer technology ?  Would lack of grommets be a good reason to tell the DW that it is time to shop for a new FT ?

It might work if you tell her it is a safety issue.  ;D
