South Dakota RV Registration

http://www.state.sd.us/drr2/motorvehicle/nonresident.htm

Since we will be going full time October 1st and upgrading to a different coach the first week of October we are trying to establish what state to make our "home".  Seem to see a large number from South Dakota.

Though this would be a good topic and get feed back pros and cons of where you have established residency.

Thanks

Since leaving Ohio, we have been "residents" of SD for the past five years. The benefits include low vehicle insurance and zero state income tax. Other states do have zero income tax. SD has a 3% excise tax on vehicle purchases. This saved us a lot when we replaced our toad (vs Texas). Our mail forwarding is in Rapid City, where we will return in October to renew our driver's license for the first time.

Jeff,

Congratulations on your new coach.  It is an over the top, unlike any other Foretravel out there.

I am a Texan so using the Escapees for our home address was an easy decision.  They have very RV friendly government folks (drivers license, title registration, etc.) in Polk county and pass the fixed address requirements that have recently cropped up.

They are just over an hour south of you down HWY 59 to Livingston and then just north of Livingston, HWY 146 to the Escapees Rainbow Park headquarters.  Great mail forwarding service.  They have their own zip code and process more mail with the optical reader/sorter than the post office in Livingston.

All the best in making your choice.

I did a quick Google search on rv home base and found a few sites, this one in particular had some good info condensed in one spot (particularly part 2)

We're residents of SD also.  We use America's Mailbox for our domicile and mail forwarding, and couldn't be more happy with them.  Great people, and run by a full time RVer.  Vehicle re-registration, etc can all be done remotely, and Pennington County is very RV friendly.

When I got a jury duty notice a while back, I called and told the clerk I was a full time RVer and she said "OK, no problem, we'll take you off the list."

When I first went there to register as a South Dakotan, I registered to vote and voted in half an hour.  Funny story: gave the voting clerk my temporary RV campground address in addition to the permanent mail address (have to be resident in SD for a day before you can register), and she said "Oh no, we're using the Walmart parking lot address now", and she put that in!

Since we own real estate in California we did not dare to claim any other state as our residence when registering the four motor homes we've owned.
