Grandvention update

Here is the first of a couple updates to the forum from the grandvention.  First of all it started out in a very lovely KOA. The food has been hit or miss but with the exception of one meal at dinner was ok. One breakfast was pretty poor as well. That is all the negative news that I can report and everything else has been a huge positive. I will say that this is the first grandvention that Lyle and Greg bot seem to value the owners and the motorcade. Most of the time they seemed in the past to doubt the value. This time both of them said we the owners are the best advertisement they have.

We have spent a number of hours discussing the motorcade club and foretrvael and their will be a motorcade discussion group today.  The information on the company is pretty exciting.  They are announcing a new model. There was only a drawing of the coach but for all of you flat floor Newell thinkers this will make you think twice. It will be positioned above the Phenix, so I assume there will be a rush to have the latest and greatest by some and that will benefit FT.  IT will also be 13 foot 2 inches tall and that is because the new EPA regs make the engines much hotter and they need a much bigger and taller radiator.  It looks to be very impressive and the company seems to have done a good job in positioning it.  Their idea of an entry level coach is a nice used coach and they said they have been having a time getting good coaches to sell at the factory.

The ask FT was wide ranging but the takeaway is that they want us the owners to help them sell coaches just by talking about them to friends and people we meet. They are working on selling them too and this year sold more coaches to non Foretravel owners than repeat buyers. That is o be expected in a way as the biggest competition to FT is Country Coach and they are no more.

Speaking of CC, Lyle and Greg both talked about it and what was announced on the website. They have been talking with Bob Lee about doing service for CC a the factory and having Bob Lees place in the NW do service on FTs. That will help our owners up in the Pacific NW.

Also they are talking to CCI which is the Motorcade club for CC and talking about doing soem joint things and providing them vendor and factory support for their coaches. It will give them a great installed base of Motorhome owners who will need to upgrade sometime adn hope that it will be FT when they do. It is a great idea and they will start out if they get it settled with just the Texas group first.

The people here are upbeat and the company is positive about survival and growth even in the down economy.  That is great news.

I want to say one other thing. The greatest resource for CC owners is their motorcade club and our own club is a wonderful source for us. We should support the club as much as we can. It is more than trips and meetings but the local rallies are a great way to share information with fellow owners. I can not tell you how much I have learned from fellow owners at the local level. We have a great group of people and see as owner should support our owners club. The corporate contribution is way way down from previous years and it will have to be self sufficient. I know we all have not agreed with everything that has been done and in fact I have a number of issues with some actions but the only way to change it and make it better is to change it from within.

Now one other thing. The best thing for all of us on the forum is that the company is aware of us here and the power we have. I pointed out the top posts and the views and the fact that the number of new people joining prior to buying any FT is high. We have a lot of people on here that are looking for information and deciding on purchasing or not. IT is a major resource for them and they do not have to pay 6k for a one page ad for a month.  That is good for all of us. I am not saying that we will change corporates mind but I have talked to them about things that have been brought up here. I would love to see some suipport from them for us but that is for another day.

Today is the discussion on the Motorcade club. The information so far is that the Maritimes Motorcade was opened to buddies and three went along and two of the three bought coaches and the last of the three is in negotiations right now. So the club does have value. There is talk of opening up the club to buddies or some of the CC guys on a space avail basis as well as the fact that they have four unused service bays too. That would be an interesting turn of events. Lyle and Greg both assured us that it would not impact on owners as we would have first priority.

That is all for now but I will write more tonight on my final observations of the Grandvention.

John,

Sounds like a very informative  Grandvention.  What I liked most was the communication that seems to be building between everyone involved with our great coaches.

I did have one observation.  Their was mention of 4 service bays that are not in use and I have read, on numerous posts, how difficult it is to get service at certain times of the year.  Would like comments from owners that have had problems and if it is a problem to make corporate aware..JMHO  Not trying to stir up a hornet's nest.

Hi John,
This is the most positive report from the new ownership in years. I think we forget what Lyle did for Foretravel. He is the reason this great company is still here. Thanks Lyle! And thanks John, for the reports. Looking forward to further updates. Enjoy the rest of the convention.

Ok, herre goes the rest of the report. There is not much new ground to cover but there is some.

Foretravel wants the owners to take more direction in the club and will be using their website to post more information for us. The COuntry Coach as well as other orphan brands will be the focus of their efforts to bring into the fold. The club is going to change some but should still provide us with the ability to gather and keep our friendships and to travel. I think their should be changes to the reservations and payment so the company is not out money. I do nto have the exact dollar figure but 10 to 12K was talked about for the northwest motorcade after pricing it at with 15 coaches the only ran it with 10 so it cost as much to cancel as to run so they sucked up and paid the difference and the ten people had a good time.

That kind of issue is what they talked about stopping. The answer will be determined but I am sure they will figure out a way.  They also are going to stress the club when they sell a FT. It is a great owners club and the best motorhome owners and travel club in the country still. I know a lot of people cancelled out when they raised the dues but the ability to have 4 days with James Triana and actually ask him a question or have him look at your coach is worth a lot.  The owners of FT should support our club as well. It is how we can pitch in to support FT to keep them viable.

If you do not know this I will put it out here. IF you own an orphaned brand it is very hard to get financing on the unit so when you want to sell it you will have to find a cash buyer. That is not a problem for the older coaches but the newer ones it will hurt a lot more and the values as a result for all the coaches will go down. That is the issue right now with CC and their owners and it is very hard to get a trade in sold. We should applaud that Greg and Lyle led us through this mess over the last two years. They have hopes the economy will improve but they are not betting the farm on it either.

They said over and over that they want the club to be strong and they want FT to be strong and the benefits of the discount on parts and the fun of your local chapter is well worth the few dollars it costs.

THe one thing I noticed is that we have as many members as the motorcade club but we have just aboptu as many active members as they have active members.  The chapters are running somewhere from 20 to 30 percent participation in their rallies and the new thing is to try to associate a chapter rally with a motorcade if it is coming thru the area. I am sure some of us will want to look at that as a way to see if we would like to take a longer trip.

The grandvention for next year was moved from Texas to LA and the site looks very nice.  There are a number of trips planned for 2011 but only 5 so far for 2012. I know the route 93 had over 23 coaches sign up for it here. That and the other trips for next year had good acceptance.

Other than the great time we all had, that is about it.  I will say that the grandvention is a great way to meet new FT owners and to renew old friendships. Over the 9 years I have had Ft I have met a number of fine people and have made many new friends.

One other thing that was stressed and I wanted to make it a second post.  They have indicated that they are going to try to gain new sales by servicing other brands. They went to great lengths to assure us that they would not cause  FT owner to be delayed. They may set up those 4 bays with their own techs for the other brands but they also talked about staffing. There is no fat at FT anywhere. They can not staff for the peak rush so they staff for what they need to have a constant steady work load. They are about 2 to 3 weeks out in scheduling but have said in an emergency they wil take you in . What is the definition of an emergency is the question. I am sure if you are buying coach or bought one and it has a problem right away they will take you in.  WHat else that means I am not sure.

They are very aware of the forum and talked about contributing but worry that they could not do it in a timely fashion and that would cause grief. It would be a full time job for James to answer all the questions posted here and we all seem to do a fine job helping each other out anyway.  We discussed putting a feature or a monthly news letter from James on FT site or to put a featured coach on this site or to link it here. They pay 6000 dollars for an ad in one month of motorhome and FMCA is being hard nosed about things and costs so FT is only doing one event with FMCA next year and that will be the Wisconsin rally. Interesting that FMCA is playing such hardball. They will not move their functions to the weekend but persist in doing it the way they always have and are losing members. Sorry for the side comment but it has been an issue wit me and FMCA for a while.

Not to side-track the discussion, but in light of what may be in discussion at the Grandvention...

I wonder if a contributing issue is finding qualified, responsible technicians these days, especially as some of the guys are looking at retirement.  These are complicated vehicles and you can't turn just anyone loose on them, so then you tie up an experienced tech in training/overseeing the newbie and even then, not all the new guys are going to work out and you're back to square one.

Last time we were at FOT, it seemed like there a lot of new faces.  One of the new ones who worked on our coach wasn't in the same league as the techs we've had in the past.

Thanks John for the update.

Seems to me management is really doing a great job in this environment .  2-3 weeks out for service and able to handle emergencies should be acceptable to everyone.

I also believe the forum helps to free James Trianas time up somewhat as we seem to be able to help each other with a great deal of questions and problems.

I will be picking up my second Foretravel in the next two weeks and have just begun full timing. I would not be able to do this lifestyle without the knowing I had the backup of both the Factory and this forum.

Wish I could have could have made the convention; always seem to learn a great deal.

Again, thanks for the update

Yes that is indeed one of the issues. I discussed that very fact with Greg.

Any discussion on how to make the Motorcade trips more attractive to the more "cost conscious" among us?  We had some good discussion and ideas in the Fire Ring a while back on this

http://www.foreforums.com/index.php?topic=10286.msg47705#msg47705

More attractive pricing options or trips could help increase interest and participation in the club events.  I think meal and tour bus are some items that have "opportunity".

The cost of the busses and meals might be a way to reduce the costs. I know we took busses this weekend to go less than 3 miles and we took busses to go to the dixie stampede and we were told there was not enough parking for us all to drive.  I agree that could reduce the costs quite a bit.

John,

Great summary of the Grandvention discussions.
I was also there and was again impressed with what a great time we had.

To Audrey and myself the Grandventions and the Chapter Rally's are must do's and a great opportunity to meet other great Foretravel folks and have a super time.  We try to move around and sit with different people at each meal or event.  The result is that we have a lot of new great friends.

BTW John.    I enjoyed meeting and talking with you.  You are much better looking in person than your picture on this forum suggests.  :P  :)) :P

Thanks Chris, it was a fun time. The food for the first time was skimpy and poor.  Oh well, it was the area I am sure. Did you get your coach fixed up. When I saw you last you were taking the tow back home.
