Paint Time @ Xtreme

I am at Camp FT, just returned from Xtreme where their graphics man wound up with a general drawing of my coach with new paint scheme.
Also paint roof, do new tail lights etc.
Problem is the "concave" issue on front of slide where the rubber badder pushes it in about 3/8" inch.
My problem is having the repair on the slide where it will last for many years.  If it needs repaired ever five or so years, I have little enthusiasm for nice paint upgrade.
Has anyone seen the "concave" on the side from the badder pressure ?
Thanks
Dave

Dave,

Based only on your description and on our experience with slide wall delamination, I'd say that some of the insulation under the fiberglass skin has become compressed.  But, whatever the cause, you won't know until the slide wall is opened, the problem found and fixed.

I can't think of any place more qualified to take this step than Xtreme.  Rance Ruthstrom opened both of the short side walls on our slide room and fixed the problem.  We are happy with those repairs and the subsequent paint job.

Next time you are here, knock on the door and say hello.

BTW - nice design.

George, Thanks for the input, and yes did chat with Rance briefly.  What I am hoping for it a proper fix that is for ever :).
After looking at it this evening, I think the red should be brighter, and the upper part, a brighter shade.  Not wanting such a dark overall color.  It does look darker on the screen here than it does on his display, so who knows.
And Yes, I agree, watched one artest doing his thing, real patients.

Dave,

Hopefully John Sichenze will chime in with his delamination experience - he has some great photos of the repair process at Xtreme.  Some are in his photo album here, but I he and Linda had e-mailed us a bunch more back when the repair was done.  I think the primary cause of the delam was incompatible materials between adhesive and insulation, and I would think James at Xtreme has that concern resolved with his repair.

Love the design!  If it helps you visualize the red color better, our coach has M 8021 A - Medium Red as the red detail in the paint job (same as what Xtreme has in yours).  It also looks darker on the design sheet than on our coach (the previous owner was kind enough to give us the order sheets when we bought the coach).  For reference, the lower color on our coach is a medium charcoal.

Dave, yes the delam is from the mastic they used eating away the insulation underneath. New mastic and clean attachment points and insulation will solve the problem.

I have seen your issue on most of the  99-01 model years I have seen with a slide out.. Dave West has it on his slide and he left i in Nac to have it fixed then drove home.  I understand he is selling his unit so it will be fixed first and then sold. Ouch.  It is an issue but it can be fixed.  I know mine was done a while ago now and the slide moves in and does not touch the bladder at all any longer.  James and MOT did a wonderful job getting it all done up right.

Michele & John, Thanks for info,

Am also having the ladder removed along with cover on the dryer vent, washer/dryer was removed in former life.

Do not have issue with the rubber bladder rubbing during slide movement, it clears nicely and no rubbing sounds.

No need for ladder, besides makes it look like a Winny or whatever.

I was thinking that I would remove my ladder some time as well. It gives it a cleaner look.

Dave,
We did this during our "Xtreme" upgrades last winter.  I'm still in love with the (for us) VAST improvement and I've had more compliments on the "cleaner" look than I can count.  We always carry a Little Giant ladder and an aluminum work step anyway.  I haven't found the lack of a fixed ladder to be any inconvenience at all, even going topside at least once every month.
Say Hi to James, Jennifer, Greg and crew for us.  They are the BEST!

Dave,
I think the color choices shown in your picture are indeed very classy.  I think you'll really like the look once the job is complete.  It gives the coach a very modern look without the rear ladder, too.

I'm a ladder guy.  I don't think they detract at all.  I also like something solid to hold on to when I am trying to get down from my roof.  And as much as I like my Telesteps ladder, it can still slip when I try to use it to get off the roof -- so I don't use it for that.

................I also like something solid to hold on to when I am trying to get down from my roof. ................
George,
The access to the fixed ladder, from the roof, was always one of the things that bothered me the most about the original ladder, George.
It always made me take a gulp (of air and blind faith) when I bent over, grabbed those 12 " high, fixed ladder extension loops and swung out over the back of the coach onto a somewhat unsubstantial feeling, lightweight construction, creaking ladder.  In fact, if you have ever taken any of the original  fixed ladder apart or have repaired any of it, you will recognize immediately why it is not OSHA ANSI A14.2 standard, Type 1A, 300 lbs, industrial use RATED.

Now, I extend the VERY substantial feeling Little Giant ladder (padded with the same sealing strip material that you used on your refer door) more than four (4) feet ABOVE the roof-line.  I have a permanent bungee cord affixed to the ladder, which, on the first upward bound pass, I clip solidly around the roof rack rail .  The well anchored Little Giant, at chest level, feels and acts much more stable than the original fixed ladder when entering the ladder from the roof.  The Little Giant takes up a 4"wide X 4'long X 20"high volume in the storage bay, but I sure like its substantial design (300#, Type 1A) and comfort of use factor (the folding aluminum platform step is Type 1A, 300# rated, also).  When I'm washing the day's bugs off the bow, the guys that gather around invariably say, "Tell me more about that Foretravel and, BTW, where'd you get that ladder?"  "I don't know which I admire more!" "Maybe I could afford the ladder!"
Perhaps not for everyone but worth the consideration of some.

Neal,

The Little Giant ladder is a very good ladder, but a little too much weight for me to handle.  At 165 pounds (me) I don't mind climbing up and down the factory installed ladder on our coach. Some of us like vanilla ice cream and others prefer Moose Tracks.

Dave,

I found there is no alternative to the test panel Xtreme sends you with your actual color scheme.  It took two tries before Richard and I were on the same path color wise.  Don't make a final decision just based on computer graphics, or even paper copies.

Agree on ladders!  I'm up there frequently - to clean solar panels, tilt them when boondocking in the desert, taking photos (great to put a tripod up on the roof and pretend I'm Ansel Adams...).  In a much younger life, I did a lot of technical rock climbing, so I could be comfortable with just handholds on the back of the rig (hard to carry tools, though.)

The coach is now at Xtreme, left it there on Nov1, and we went over everything with James and Rance, signed the papers, did the deposit thing, now wait for the 4 week period.
Liked the color scheme George S. has, so mine will be about the same color, just different layout.
The attached should give general idea.
Remove ladder, add LED tail lights and roof paint etc.
Now for the prayer session to begin for the right turn out.

Dave H, you would laugh if you knew the agony I went through over the 07 Green Phenix  at FoT, if it were not a consignment coach,I would be driving it instead of the paint job.

Lots of people tell us they like our paint scheme the best, but I am with
Dave Head on his opinion of Jim and Sim's coach.  It was the first FPB Foretravel I saw and it was (is) a real beauty.  I wonder who owns that coach now?

Dave,

When you pick up your coach you will be so glad you didn't by the green '07 Phenix.  It's still not to late to go with the green color scheme and design that Dave Head mentioned. I'm sure James would be glad to e-mail photos to you.

Funny how color makes or breaks a deal.  I am told one of the two reasons that 07 Phenix has not sold is due to only one slide and other is the green paint. Seems green is not a highly desireable color for motor homes.  Beats Me, as I do like the color  :))

I looked up that '07 Phenix for sale at FOT.  Wow.  it's a beauty.  Not for me, though.  It would be good for a full timer.  All electric with six...count them...six house batteries.  That's a lot of $$$ every 4 to six years.  Nonetheless, it still is a great coach for someone out there with lots of bucks to spare.  If so, then getting another paint job to suit is only another $20 grand...peanuts for this type owner... 8)
