Bathroom Mirror loosing silver backing -- Looking for a Solution

One of the mirrors in our bathroom is showing its age with some of the silver backing now missing.  I plan to replace this myself, but am not sure what is the best way.

One solution would not involve removing the mirror.  I was thinking about having a thin walnut picture frame built of a sufficient profile to hide the ugly spots.  This would involve some clever fastening, but I think I can figure out a way.

Another solution would be to remove the old mirror and have a very slightly larger mirror cut to replace the old one.  If I use this approach I am concerned about getting the old mirror off without making of a mess of the wall in back of the mirror.

I am looking for suggestions.

Let me restate this.  I'd prefer to remove the old mirror.  Does any one have any suggestions as to how to do this without the wall coming with it?  Does anyone know what is in back of that vinyl wall covering on the bathroom wall?

Since you're in Nac....

I would stop by FOT and ask David Flanagan for his advice on removing the mirror.  He's probably got a trick or two to recommend and can tell you what to watch out for.  David's always been helpful when we've had a question.

Then you can post back here and tell us all how you successfully removed that mirror  :)

I removed the bathroom mirrors on our U270 by taking the little screw-brackets off and then slipping a putty knife behind the mirrors.  They came off very easily.  These were the mirrors behind the sink, which we replaced with tile.

Michelle I met David Flannigan this morning and got his suggested approach.  I plan to remove and replace the mirror next winter when we will be cue tips in Ocala, FL until April 1.
I will post photos and describe the process at that time.

Pat,

Too funny.  I even screwed up the comment.  I meant to type Q-Tips.  Anyway,  seniors who live north and travel south for the winter are called "snow birds."  I recently heard us referred to as Q-Tips. White hair on top; white shoes on our feet.

Got it?  Tee hee.

george s .  other than replacement , I dont know .  I do know that our  mirror silver loss was caused by too much spray cleaner ,it ran down back causing the problem. So the cure is to have only dirty mirrors . save money, go fishing , smile .

Brad,

I wondered what would cause that silver loss.  That's it!  I am not cleaning that mirror again.

George. That photo could just as easily be of the corner of one of my bathroom mirrors! I noticed it about three days ago, no telling how long it has been that way. Please let me know your solution!

George,
From the picture I can't tell if is a behind the sink mirror.  If it is, have you considered replacing it with a tile back splash?  I think tile would be nice and a bit more up to date.

Horace: I am going to replace it in January or February and I will take pics and post them.

Peter:  tile would be nice, but glass is faster and cheaper.
