Cummins Engine Recall

Has anyone had personal experience with the ISL engines produced in 2006 and 2007 that were subject to the recall for wrist pin problems.  Should I shy away from a coach with an engine with this problem. The engine numbers were from 46543077 to 46603939 and were installed in 36 and 38 foot Foretravel coaches in 2006 and 2007. Also did you get an extended warranty from Cummins?

If a wrist pin was to fail, it would do so in the first few thousand miles or be "good to go".

As long as a 3-4 year old coach was not a "garage potato" this should not be a concern.

I believe the recall just put a shut down idiot light on the dash for you to shut it down if it goes off.  I agree with the previous post, if it has not happened so far it should not happen. They had a bad lot of wrist pins but it should have showed up by now if it was on that particular engine.

Cummins had a campaign on the ISL wrist pins, everyone was contacted and all pins should have been replaced years ago, if the owner refused or did not take his ISL in for the warranty updates, well I guess he might have a problem one day as the pins had a bad seam in the manufacturing process.

My 07 Nimbus has one of the recalled engines (I believe there was a TOTAL of 7 Foretravels involved - lucky me!  (this is out of a total of about 2300 [if I remember correctly] engines.

Cummins DID NOT repair or replace anything.  They simply added a new sensor wired into the ecm warning system.  I was told by a Cummins engineer that the destruct rate was less than 2% and if it was going to happen it would happen in the first couple thousand miles (he claimed they had never seen the problem in an engine over 5,000 miles).  I have about 32,000 miles on mine and have not had a problem as a result of the recall problem.  Cummins added a lifetime warranty for failures resulting from this wrist pin problem.  ONLY TO THIS PROBLEM.

In the past 3 months I have been afflicted with 2 sensor problems.  Both times the engine derated and I had to be towed.  Sensors were replaced under warranty, but I still had to pay one of the towing charges.

John,
Good to hear from you.  I guess this is the prime example of warranties w/o consequential damages.  Cummins wil pay for the repair, but not the related other costs associated with the failure of its parts.
