DirectTV changeover to Dish service.

I have the "in-motion" signal seeking satellite antenna on the roof connected to an older (2001) Sony  DirectTV receiver.  Seriously considering a changeover to "Dish" satellite service and wondering if the software that seeks the satellites will continue to function seamlessly with the Dish receiver as it did with the DirectTV receiver?

My reason for dumping DirectTV is that they now severely limit the number of service suspensions/yr (while the RV is in storage) and Dish has no such limitations.  BTW, I have cable TV service at the house.

I just reprogramed my Tracstar 360 for the right birds. It lost its programing somehow. It was not too hard to do.  As to Dish the bird is a bit lower in the sky and further north and or trees may be an issue but people are using it so it must not be a big issue......

I spoke to Winegard recently about changing from Directv to Dish. I understood them to say that you could make the switch by either changing dip switches on the Carryout or with my Traveler 1000 Sat antenna change the dish itself. Changing the dish would cost bout $300 but it is something I should be able to do myself. Changing dip switches costs nothing.

Does anyone have any experience with re-programming the in motion "Datran" dish on my roof ?

Fiddler,
The last time I checked into this, it was a "No-Go", and that was a few years ago.
My Datron DBS-4000 (Bless its heart, still working fine), has an onboard EPROM (in the dome) that would need to be "flashed" with new data if I were to move off of the current DirecTV satellites.  Since Datron went out of the In-Motion satellite reception business years ago and ASA (the buyer) is also out of the business, there is little market to keep our Datron systems operational, much less to reconfigure or upgrade them, which would be even smaller markets.  I have pretty much accepted that when the DBS-4000 quits or DirecTV puts up different birds, I might as well replace everything.
FWIW,
Neal

Yeah, I was told to toss my Datron when I bought our 1999 U320 and did so.  I'll remove the noisy dish on the roof soon, too.

The earlier Datron DBS3000 was controlled by serial cable comms with a specific range of receivers. There were both Dish and Direct receivers avail, and spec'ed in the back of the manual. You entered the Zip of your location on the receiver and the Datron figured out from there to align to the satellite and sync.
