Kent,

When I bought our '92 U-280 in'03, it came with a lead-acid 8D as a starting battery, which cranked our C8.3 mechanical just fine, so I have continued with that size.  The lead-acid battery lasts at least 3-4 years, so $130-140 isn't unreasonable, IMHO.

So now that I need a new battery and the coach will be in storage all winter, does the battery have to be replaced right now for a specific reason or will it be ok if I wait till spring? If It's ok to wait till spring do I just leave the coach plugged in, remove the bad battery and not worry about it?

I think that makes good sense.
Remove the bad one and wait to buy the new ones.

My '91 GV also has two 8D wet cell batteries, one for the engine and the other for the house battery.  It came from the factory that way, I believe.

One of the things I love about this forum is what I learn. I have learned that there are 8D starting batteries and in retrospect, my U225 must have been retrofitted to use two series 34 starting batteries. When looking at the battery cables it is apparent that the cables were custom made to allow parallel wiring of two group 34's. That is why I thought they were made by Foretravel. I presume the original owner preferred redundancy if one starting battery failed but if it is acceptable to use the 8D for starting, all one would have to do is use disconnect the bad battery and use the boost switch.

Thanks all for the enlightenment.

Kent,

The specification sheet at beamalarm.com for the 1993 U225 shows 2 gel cell batteries for the chassis batteries. If your U225 was a '93 model, the wiring may have been installed for a pair of 34 batteries at the factory.

The specification sheet for our 1997 U295 shows two gel cells, also. We now use 2 series 34 AGM batteries. The house batteries comprise three 8D AGM batteries. I prefer to use all AGM batteries for cleanliness and consistency. The AGMs appear to promote minimal corrosion, and all the batteries on my coach have the same charging requirements.

The tray for the chassis batteries on our coach would accept three series 34 batteries, but would be too narrow to accept an 8D battery.
