Replacement mattress questions

Not getting any younger here

We're thinking of replacing the mattress in our coach. It's the standard kind. Thinking of getting either latex (what we have at home) or memory foam (Costco has some great deals).

Any idea how much the standard mattresses weigh? The memory foam ones are around 100 pounds for a queensize. Not sure how that would work on the bed lift for engine access.

Any other suggestions? Well, other than Sleep Number. We tried one when shopping for our home mattress and I didn't care for it.

We changed to an air mattress a couple of years ago. This created two problems. The first mattress did not last long until we figured how to protect it from the claws of pets. The second is not yet a problem, more of a concern. We live at 8,000. If we do not remember to let some air out before leaving the lowlands, the mattress is certainly firm when we get home.

Raising the bed is no trouble. Usta hafta place a short piece of pvc to brace up the bed; now this is not necessary.

We replaced the "standard" inner spring mattress on our SOB with a custom made memory/foam latex short queen. We had to go custom because of the size. I also had to build a solid plywood frame to replace the (college dorm/army type) spring and metal mesh support.

The memory foam and plywood were heavy, but I could lift the bed by myself. The previous owner had placed a "safety stick" under the mattress to hold up the old mattress when it was up for access. It was useful for the old and new mattresses.

We really liked the custom mattress. We had it built at a factory in Houston. We specified length, width, thickness, and materials. We tried several model beds, and then chose the memory foam density, a latex layer, and a covering thickness. It was about $900 for a great mattress made to our specifications. Since it was a short queen, we couldn't transfer it to the FT.

We have an air bed in the U295. It is OK. I added a 3" memory foam topper, and it is now very comfortable for us.

The previous owners had to replace the original air bed after it exploded in the mountains. The air bed must be adjusted for altitude and temperature.

We put in a Temper Pedic. We love it. Have one at home, at our weekend place and in the coach. You should check them out.

We have one of these at home - BedInABox.com: Memory Foam Mattress, Memory Foam Mattress Foundations, Memory. Have the PacBamboo Plus 13" Memory Foam Mattress, on top of the old box springs. Been about 2 years now and we are both quite happy. I'm sensitive to foam - makes me sweat, but this is not bad at all. Almost hate to get up in the morning, it is so comfortable. You can get both the regular Queen and the RV Queen. It was either the $1250, plus shipping, Hampton Inn mattress with $50 mattress pad, or Bedinabox, and we thought this was cheap enough that if we did not like it we could throw it out after a year. Well, we kept it. But I don't think it is quite as comfortable as the Hampton Inn mattress. But it is not $500 less comfortable!

Would I put one in the Foretravel? I don't know. It is heavy, and I'm not sure I would want to try to get one to the back of the motorhome. They tell you to take it in the bedroom and put it on the bed before you open it. When you open it, it grows very fast and unfolds almost by itself. Don't think you can do that in a coach!!! You would have to unwrap it out side and take it in the regular way. If we were to get one, it would not be the 13". I think the PacDown™ 9" Memory Foam Mattress or the PacBamboo 11" Memory Foam Mattress would make me very happy.

We definitely prefer the comfort of foam - have latex here at the house. I also have troubles with some foam being hot.

The one I'm considering is Costco - NovaForm ® Pure Comfort Deluxe Queen Mattress

I have to say, the Bed in a Box ones look pretty good, too.

The price is great. I'm just not sure about the weight on the bed lift-up.

We went to Wal-Mart and purchased a 4" foam topper for our old mattress. Works great. These also come in 6" and 8". Liked it so much we put one on our mattress at home.

We have a TempurPedic in storage at the condo in Port Aransas, and will switch the standard mattress in the coach for it next week. We have a TP here at home and love it. We thought about the bed-in-a-box from Walmart, but many reviews mentioned the smell. I was worried about the smell in the small motorhome bedroom never going away.

We purchased our 4 inch Serta Memory Foam Topper from Overstock.com (was $189, now on sale today for $169) and I also purchased the Down Alternative Cover for Memory Foam (now $54) which is an enclosed zippered coverlet that you put the foam topper in. This keeps the heat factor down since the top of the cover is padded and quilted. And of course it is washable. And Overstock (honest I don't own any stock) only charges $2.95 for shipping. We just love the Memory Foam. Overstock had only a dozen or so to offer back in 2008 when I purchased it; now they have a lot to offer. What I really like about Overstock is the customer reviews on their products and you can sort the mdse search by various factors. If you are considering a memory foam topper, I would go for the 4 incher. Keep in mind, when you add a topper to the existing mattress as we did, you need to switch your sheets to deep pocket to accommodate the topper and mattress.

When we bought "The Burrow", it had a new, comfortable, seems to be quality (haven't looked at the brand) mattress. When we moved out of the apt., we added our Sam's Club 4" memory foam mattress topper (abt 70 lbs.) to the bed; and, have had great sleeping ever since. The downside is when Madison feels the need to sleep with us, she can't get her chubby behind up without a step stool; which we, as her servants, provide nightly.

Did you see the one reviewed in MotorHome Magazine, February 2011 issue? It was in the Techsavvy column on page 55. Bob Livingston reviewed a Tempflow RV6000 and a RV8000 that he had recently purchased. It is available from Tempflow - The Memory Foam Mattress That Breathes! who has a dealer in Texas. Bob ended the article saying "Early morning walks are now off the table; this bed is just too comfortable".

I don't know how long Bob sleep on it before writing the review. I like to use something at least 6 months, if not longer, before reviewing it. And have brought a couple thing the Paul Harvey has highly endorsed only to find out that I should have read other reviews before buying.

Several years ago, when our old mattress gave up the ghost, we got a TempurPedic. Best decision we ever made... well, second to falling for each other...

When we sold the house and most all of our 'stuff', the TempurPedic stayed and went into the coach. Weighs a bit more than the "thing-they-call-a-mattress" that was in the coach but nothing that presents too much of a problem. Certainly, the comfort of the TempurPedic outweighs any other concern. Brand new, they take a bit of breaking in but no big deal - wouldn't ever go back. These are the best!

Lately, I've been eyeing a new "model" they have called "TempurCloud"...

We replaced the mattress when we bought our coach in 06. We wanted to sit on the bed and have our feet on the floor. We had a local mattress manufacturer make us a 3" foam (we prefer it, also) with an inch of memory foam on top.We can now sit on the bed with our feet on the floor. There is no problem raising the bed to get to the engine, we use the expanding towel (and multipurpose) rod for holding it up, supplementing the struts.

I always take the MH magazine reviews with a grain of salt. Many times they're for products associated with or sold by an Affinity Group company (Good Sam ERS, Camping World, Camp Club, etc.). I'm suspicious about whether Bob (as publisher of MH mag) paid for the mattress out of his own pocket or might he have been provided one to test by the Tempflow people?

Suzanne raises a good point about the topper making it difficult for the canine family members. Jumping down, since it's onto the tile in the bath, is a big worry (yes, the Posse are bed hogs, unlike Madison). Guess we should measure the existing mattress' thickness next time we're out at the storage facility and look for something around that thickness. I know it's not 12", so any similar memory foam should be less weight than the 12" Costco one.

My son got a high priced 3" memory foam single bunk mattress for his over the road tractor. Did not use it very long. Anyway he sold the truck and kept the mattress, stored in our attic. My wife borrowed it when she went to visit a cousin that did not have extra bed. She could not believe how well she slept on it. Compares it to the 12" foam mattress. Only 3". Don't know who makes it.

Our Foretravel had a new mattress when we got it. We put a Woolrich feather bed topper on it and it works great.

And I have to agree about MH magazine. Lots of real questionable products in there!

I sympathize. Maybe our trials and tribulations can be of some help.
Finding the "right" mattress can be a long and frustrating process. Especially with all of the variables, times two for two people, as well as all of the wild advertising claims.
By way of background, Brenda and I both come from long lineages of bad backs. I went twenty years with two herniated discs, before I finally had disc surgery (surgery is supposed to be the last resort, but, in my case, I should have had it done years before!). Brenda has debilitating knee AND back problems. On top of that, Brenda can't resist a bargain! Thus, we've had a bunch of mattresses over the 12 years that we've had the coach. Some were bargain basement, three (Conventional, Latex and Foam) were expensive, some good for a while, others not at all good for us, right from the start, although they were all advertised as being miraculous by close family, friends and various salesmen.

We eventually became desperate enough, from lack of quality sleep, that we took the scientific approach to figuring out what we were doing wrong. We followed the advice of an Orthopedic surgeon, who recommended a sleep study center. Our health care program covered the analysis.
Through pressure point and electrode analysis (electrocardiogram type sensors), a sleep study MD was able to recommend (prescribe) the type and density of mattress that she felt would relieve our issues. In an unanticipated twist, I also came to understand that I must use a CPAP machine in order to sleep well.

But anyway, VOILA! Science wins again!
For us, the TEMPUR-Cloud Supreme (Tempurpedic) was one of the few, "reasonably-affordable" choices that could provide the prescribed support and density to resolve our issues. The TEMPUR-Cloud Luxe was also a choice, but was much more expensive. Since we could upgrade within 90 days if the Supreme didn't work, we tried the Supreme first, after finding it in a 25% off sale.

I have no idea if all of this would work for others, but it has been a very successful answer for us. The answer to what we did not understand and couldn't seem to sort out from the myriad of advertising claims and personal advice from friends and family.

We now have Cloud Tempurpedics at home and in the coach. They are heavy, they were placed by the delivery company (with no difficulty), when raised - the coach bed platform has to be supplemented with a brace to help the gas struts (but isn't at all bad to hinge up into the raised position) and they are thick (10") . But, we are very pleased with both the warm and cold weather comforts of the Cloud Tempurpedics in both the house and the coach. We had had a Tempurpedic before, but of too firm a density. The earlier Tempurpedic we had found to be excessively firm in colder weather (before it absorbed body heat), odorous when it was brand new and it didn't seem to breath very well in warm, humid weather. The newer Cloud Tempurpedics seem to have entirely overcome ALL of those issues. But most of all, the proper configuration memory foam has provided us with consistent good sleep that we haven't enjoyed in years.

LOL - just been "eyeing" the cloud... while at the "relax-the-back" store not long ago checking out their recliners, I spent some time getting to know one of the "clouds" they had on the floor. If it would of been closing time, I would of stayed the night with my new friend... that is one comfortable bed! We are sold on TempurPedics.

I still have to figure out a way to gauge Kim's openess to getting a cloud without tipping my cards. She loves the current mattress and being an RN, is alot more practical than me.... humm... classified ads, eh?

Got one of these yesterday to try for the coach bed. We're using it at home for testing. Boy, do we like it. It just made our current mattress into a great mattress. Getting a second one as we're keeping this one for the stick home bed... And, Costco has these on sale until the end of the month at the warehouse as well as on-line.

Correction...I just looked at my Costco Warehouse receipt, and the warehouse price is lower than the internet price. We paid $108.49 after the $30 off. And, the online taxes are calculated based on the $149.99 price...there's no shipping charge online.
