Progressive insurance

I just got my renewal from Progressive and they went up by over 25%.  Anyone else experience this?  I do not wish to pay over $5000 for my coverage.

Gerard,
Have you tried calling them to get that rate adjusted?  I would do that after shopping around for other quotes.

My ERS bill came in a month ago and went up to $113 for the year.  I called and got the rate moved back to the original rate of $100 from a couple years back.

Hi Gerard,
This will be my fourth year with Progressive. No increases here. Third year saw a small price reduction. This year saw another small price reduction. Insurance companies, and their rates, are mysteries to me.

It all depends on which state you live in and how good, or bad, you state's insurance department/commission is.  That pretty much controls it.  The rest is determined by insurance actuaries.    Actuaries are experts in evaluating the likelihood of future events, designing creative ways to reduce the likelihood of undesirable events, and decreasing the impact of undesirable events that do occur, for insurance companies.  You don't want to understand the rest of it!  It is kind of like a intelligence analyst.

Since your Progressive premiums have increased, maybe your credit score has gone down?

Last October, Progressive raised our rates by 25%. When I called and asked, I was told that increases were due to our South Dakota registration.

Bob,
That reason sounds bogus.  Where were you domiciled before SD, the Yukon Territiry?  Goodness, I would think that SD has low insurance compared to most places.

Our rates jumped last October with Progressive as well. We are domiciled in Florida. Ended up switching both the car and rig with GMAC and saved that money.

When we considered becoming SD residents, we checked insurance rates and found them to be MUCH HIGHER than Washington insurance rates.  When we asked, we were told it was due to the extensive hail damage that occurs in SD.

FWIW - We, too, were with Progressive - until they decided to arbitrarily increase our rates. (I also don't at all like their political affiliations; JMHO.) We switched to Farm Bureau with significant savings. We've suggested FB to anyone who asks.

I have a friend who uses Progressive in Arkansas and pays pretty much the same premium with close to the same coverage as I do with Farm Bureau. I've been fairly pleased with FB performance over the years regarding a few issues with my house and 1 out building, I think they were fair. They did however tear my head off on settlement of total loss on a 50 ft fiberglass boat. Never did make me feel good about it but did appease enough to stop my all out search for new insurance for every thing I own

I suggest that those of you who are full timers may want evaluate your policies line by line, word for word, as to what your company actually covers as it relates to your lifestyle.  I did quite a bit of research with several companies and especially Progressive and GEICO where there rates were MUCH lower (like 50%) than others who specialized in RV insurance.  I asked a lot of questions and got a lot of varied answers from different people at the SAME company.  I also found that the ONLY way I could get a copy of the policy that I would be purchasing, was to buy the policy without being able to see it and what it actually covered.  I do not like doing business like that.
I finally gave up and continued with Explorer RV, which I will do until I can determine an overall better program.

I would be very interested in having everyone on the forum scan their policies and post them in a .pdf format for perusal by us all for info purposes.
Comparing them will I am sure provide some very enlightening results.  Personal information can be whited out so that only the Make, Model and Year and the insurance companies codes are shown.
I can see no reason why my policy should not be available for others to view.  Can anyone see a negative?
I believe it will stimulate discussions regarding the TYPE of coverages that we have once we have the ability to compare them.
I don't know much about insurance but I am learning that there are BIG differences in coverage and what kinds of coverage is needed.

As far as total loss, my agent say's FB will pay what the blue book says the motor home is worth. More often than not that figure is much less than the owner assumes....... There is a hugh mistake regarding insurance coverage.......... To assume.

Regarding scanning policies. In some cases policy language and available coverage will vary by state due to the laws in that state so this would not necessarily help you decide.

Yes, I reduced my insurance coverage $30K the year due to the rapid depreciation going on in this market, even for a ten year old coach.

Amos, If I had done that on my boat I wouldn't have taken the beating I did. I kept making upgrades and increasing coverage and premiums yearly, having zero effect on the blue book value on the boat. I was wrong in "assuming" the value would increase. I couldn't help but be put out at my agent  of 25 years and also close aquantance........but utimatley a salesman, for not tugging on my sleve and mentioning I would never come out on increasing my premium. Naive on my part  but he would have a more trusting customer in me if he had.
Didn't mean to get off  Motor Homes and on to boats but obviously the principal is the same. Again my insurance is Farm Bureau, not progressive.

Have A look at GMAC , while checking rates .  They reduced my cost by 68% . I am not name loyal when it comes to ins , not even to an ins. agent even if he is A friend .I learned this the hard way .  Companys before this were  , State Farm ,21st , and AON ins . GMAC beat the lot of them rather well .    Just my 2 cents  worth .

I recently priced out GMAC vs my State Farm policy in Oklahoma. GMAC was over twice as much as State Farm. And, State Farm has been great paying claims in the past. FWIW

Kent ; looks like it is the state/ location ,that decides the price .  I have the LLC thing at MT. , but keep all ins at my home VA address. All I did was shop and compare till I couldn't see an improvement in price . PS I did the GMAC thing at the home office at ST Lewis Mo.  Got the # from FMCA with A ref#  .  Good luck

We had GMAC for years and they priced themselves out of the market. Switched to Hartford and got both Motorhomes and the cars for what the GMAC was for the motorhome alone....Pays to shop around. Insurance companies are regulated by the state and use state claims for their rate setting but they also look at the book and when they are short in one area they will reduce costs to get more business and when they have too much in another area they raise prices to reduce their exposure and reinsure the rest. PC is a complex business but understanding a bit of how they operate takes the mystery out of it.

Regarding John's comment: "I suggest that those of you who are full timers may want evaluate your policies line by line, word for word, as to what your company actually covers as it relates to your lifestyle."

When I checked GEICO, they told me they understand full-timers and have personal liability coverage for this lifestyle.

Only when I looked into GEICO further, their personal liability coverage is called something like 'campground liability coverage' and it only covers us when in or around a campground.  And does not cover us in Wal Mart, etc if we trip someone, etc.  It was not Full-timers coverage.  They know about this discrepency and were still choosing to mislead when I talked to them a few years ago.  GEICO knows how to market.  We chose National Interstate.

We started Rving in '05 - wrote first policy with USAA - sold that coach in 11 months. Took about 15 months before got 2nd coach at that point USAA was underwriting via Progressive and giving a discount to USAA members - that is what am using now, just convenient.

Does anyone know what/who FOT using for rv insurance?

For property I have a renter's policy with USAA which covers our personal besides what the Progressive covers - I may be way over insured and not sure if one would delete the other if a claim. I have a storage unit thus qualify for the renter's policy.

From Progressive I get a discount for being a good driver etc. Not sure what ones credit score does but am sure anything one or any of these provider companies can use to "control" us they will - I firmly believe in "freedom" ha ha ha

Remember THEY have no love and we should not either - all this crap about customer loyalty when out with the babies bath water decades ago before we grew our first gray hair or are thinking about growing the first.

$'s speak and walk with ones wallet - In all my humble opinion
