Alison 4060 trans

I read a wile ago about the operation of this transmission. That it does many things that I don't know anything about. I guess it varies with years, Like my buddy has a 99 Monaco Signature Series with the same trans and he can check fluid level on the shift pad, I looked at the book and it's kinda vague . How do you learn about the Allison HD 4060 trans in a 96 U320 with the Cummings  M11 engine and what it does and how to operate it ?  Thanks    Art

Art,

Put the trans in neutral when it is at full operating temp when the coach is on level ground.  Press the up and down arrows simultaneously.  That should start the countdown to read oil level.  BTW, if you press both arrows twice, you can read any faults the trans has detected.

Has anyone had to replace/rebuild their Allison 4060R transmission?

I am looking at a U320 and just want some idea of the cost if it needs a rebuild.

I drove it today and thought it drove really well but my DW is concerned that it made a strange noise when we were driving over 55 mph. It was hard for me to hear anything being up front and driving the big unit for the first time.

Mine has a squeak on the 4-5 upshift at times.

Best I can describe mine,  had another noise but lubing the shaft and splines lessens it.

These are considered bulletproof unless you have antifreeze go through it,  $6k plus labor for an Allison reman

Sounds in the rear inside part of the coach could come from anything, like turbo, drive shaft, and are best located by driving with bed propped up and a homemade stethoscope.
