ShurFlo Water pump failure

Carol forgot to mention we started the day at Camping World to have the NEW (2 months) water pump replaced. Water pump defective..

The last two times we used Camping World they have been great. On time, priced correctly, neatly done.

Sure could tell it was Friday the 13th...Next time I will stay parked... ;D

It was a ShurFlow ... variable speed, fancy schmancy, high priced blah blah blah.  I think I shoulda stuck with the cheaper one and kept my accumulator tank.  MOT's install was correct, but the pump housing itself was leaking.  We watched it for a while, to make sure it was not the water heater or a connection. Camping World confirmed that it was the pump and handled the warranty replacement.  They were having a special on water heater, water pump, propane heater, etc INSPECTIONS and tuneups, so we paid that price for the diagnosis and install ... $89.  Of course, we spent more than that on stuff we wanted in the store!  I should stop getting their email SALE ads!!

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but others here have reported having to replace up to 3 ShurFlow pumps within a short period of time -- each one was under warranty.  So, it would be wise to check the pump bay occasionally.  I did not replace my accumulator tank when it ruptured in February and followed the lead of our esteemed ForeForums leader and installed an AquaTec pump.  So far, so good.  I hope I did not just jinx myself. :-\

George,
We have a Flo-Jet in our coach and it is starting to cycle more causing the water at the spigots inside to pulse so am looking for a replacement.  How do you like the AquaTech pump?  Quiet, good water pressure, etc., etc.?

Bill,

The AquaTec /series 55-Aquajet pump works very well.  The pressure is really good.  Noise is more of a factor of where your pump is located.  If we listen for the pump, we hear it.  If there is anything else going on:  TV, conversation and the like we do not even notice it.

Installation was a whole lot easier than I thought it would be.  I've never done anything like it before.  I got mine from the RV Water Filter Store.  With some diligent shopping you can probably find it elsewhere for a few bucks less.  But I like the RVWFS and try to support them.  They make incredibly fine potable water hoses.

Speaking of hoses, they make a "Quiet Loop" hose for use in installing the water pump.  It is supposed to cut down on the noise.  It really simplified installation for me.

Our coach was originally delivered with an AquaTec pump (no room for an accumulator because of the toilet vacuum pump), so when ours died after 8 years we replaced it with the same.  The new pump is quieter with less pulsing than the original AquaTec, so they've improved things over the years.  The quiet loop works well, as does making sure the pump doesn't touch anything in the bay.  Steve actually tweaked the placement of ours after reading how quiet George's was, and it is now so quiet that just as George mentioned, we only hear it if we are listening for it.  The quiet loop is nothing fancy, just a short length of flexible hose so the pump isn't plumbed with hard PVC which would translate vibration.  It does have the added benefit of making installation easier because of the line flex.

According to our receipt, list on the RV model (not ES) in 2010 was $194.95.  We got ours with a discount from Holman Motors in Cinci thanks to Peter Martin, and paid slightly more than George did, but not significantly (and we got the added bonus of meeting Peter and Beth!).  The RV Water Filter store price is a good one (depending on how much shipping is).

Jeff & Carol,
Have you thought about applying for the Free Enterprise Award? Since you seem to be doing more than your share to support local economies, you probably would qualify. We got our award last year. The main benefit is that we now get to whine more loudly.[?]

I use a Shurflo 400 extreme. I did experience various pump failures on two pumps both taken care of under warranty. But the last problem I fought thinking it was a pump problem. The pump would chirp about every ten minutes indicating a leak in the system. No leak found so to narrow it down I shut off all manifold valves. the chirping stopped. I then turned each valve back on until the pump cycling started again when turning on the lav sink cold water manifold valve. So the search started again, no water leaks found. So I left the valve in the off position. Time to dump and take on fresh water. I hooked up my filters and water hose, opened the water valve in the coach, turned on the water valve, nothing. I can't get water to flow to the tank. After much searching I realized the only thing different was the valve to the cold water  lav sink was off. I opened the valve and the water flowed. When the coach was built someone saved a few feet of pex by shunting  through the manifold. To make the long story short it turned out to be the faulty valve under the lav sink was leaking and the pump was simply pumping water back to the water tank around and around. All the time I was thinking I had another bad pump that was leaking internally causing me all this grief. This mistaken plumbing job also accounts for the long refill times required on alot of other Foretravels. I cannot correctly plumb the system do access issues so will continue to put up with the short comings of this plumbing job. I did talk to Foretravel (Mark Harvey) and he confirmed this was not as designed.  So it's not always the pump at fault but it can be blamed for other causes.

Gordy, Go around the valve to fill tank.  Many of us have.
I  drilled a hole in side of water tank, installed a fitting, attached a short piece of potable water tubing and led it to a check valve and a hose connector in the water bay.
Now I fill tank in about 15 minutes max direct ,into tank.
Simple fix saves a lot of grief.
