Enclosed car trailer

A friend Paul who has a 2004 34' Foretravel U270 with ISL 400 HP engine asked what enclosed trailers are being towed by Foretravel owners? Paul also asked what is the best tow dolly manufactured?

Paul is looking for tongue weight, trailer width, trailer length, loaded trailer weight, if using stacker, brand, etc. And what are the problems towing an enclosed trailer or tow dolly.

I think Paul is looking to use a front wheel drive car that cannot be towed four on the ground and to carry a golf cart. And thinks a 8-1/2 foot wide trailer is what he wants.

Barry,
One major advantage of the trailer over the dolly, you can back the trailer, not the dolly with a car on it.
There is never a simple answer to this one, some folks prefer one over the other for various reasons, so I guess it is simply a matter of what is most important, carrying alot of junk of just towing a car

I have all of my info on an Excel spreadsheet and I've done most all (car, no car, dolly, evaluated a motorcycle rack option, trailer, etc.).

I pull a 24ft. Featherlite 8.5 ft. wide. Same width as m/h makes it very easy to back up as you can see it as it starts to swing to the right or left which allows you to correct and back in a straight line. Weight is the enemy so I would go with a aluminum. I would not recommend a Featherlite trailer, they are very well built but they set the wheels too far to the rear making it very difficult to keep excessive weight off the tongue. I have measured every 24ft. trailer I have had access to. The featherlite wheels are 7 to 16 inches set farther to the rear. I would look at the ATC brand if I could do it over.
I pulled a tow dolly once / never again. I'm 70 ft. long and it make for very limited access to many places not to mention illegal in some states. keep it short, go Gordy with a stacker if you can.

I read somewhere in my Foretravel Info. that the maximum tongue weight allowed on my, '94- U300 Grand Villa was 350lbs. I do not remember where this came from, and if anyone has different info. please post...

I too have read the 350# tongue weight, in my info on my 1993 U-225. That was just before I needed to tow the Work & Play 18LT home the weekend we bought the coach. I used the weight distribution hitch to reduce the hitch down forces. My trailer was reported to have over 700# of tongue weight. Was able to pull the 8'x 23 1/2' trailer with nice tailwinds the 200 miles without problems.

We are now setting up a toad, looking at maybe a single motorcycle rack, and have an open folding Kendon 2 bike trailer.

I suggest that he consult with the members of the Yahoo Group, Motorhomes_Pulling_Trailers
They are all pulling trailers of many different configurations.
They can elaborate on the benefits and pitfalls of not doing proper research prior to purchase.

He should also determine EXACTLY what he intends to haul, as everything depends.......
It would be interesting to know WHAT he is going to be using to haul the trailer and whether or not it is up to the task.

There is a LOT involved in making a satisfactory decision.
