Minor repair to windshield

On our way to Virginia a stone struck the driver side windshield and chipped out a small piece of glass -- kind of like a bullseye.  We tried to get a mobile repair done locally, but could not work it out.  A called a friend of mine who took a course in glass repair and he suggested I get a kit from an auto parts store and fix it myself.

Bought a Permatex Windshield Repair Kit at Advance Auto parts and am very happy with the results.  It is actually a better job than a similar repair we had done in Nac.  I recommend this product.  Permatex also has a video on line that did a step by step repair.  Very helpful.

Being the owner of a complex motorhome has made me learn to do things I never thought I could accomplish.  And, ForeForums has made many of those repairs/upgrades much easier to do.

George, thanks for the product tip. I have thought many times that I could fix the chips myself but had never thought of finding the acrylic product at an auto parts store. Did you drill out the center of the chip with a Dremel Tool to get more filler into the chip? Please post the actual name of the product.

Kent,

I did not drill the chip.  It was clean and the directions did not call for that step.  The pros might do that, but I can just see the windshield cracking as I was using the drill.  Not a happy thought. By the way, the kit was $12.95.

I reviewed the MSDS and Product Data Sheet. This looks like a pretty good product and one that the normal person can use. It would not hurt to have a UV Light to accelerate the cure, but it will cure with just sunlight. The next time I get a chip, I will purchase it.
