No Relief From The Heat Concern

How is everyone doing in the high temps? Don't see any relief anytime soon on the weather sites. Tips anyone has found for keeping the sun at bay? Kent, how many weeks has it been over 100? New rear air, fridge working OK? R134 working as well as the old R22 in the new Penguin?

What heat?

We are in Bryce Canyon at 7700 ft... Highs in the 70s!

It's topped 100 here for must be 2 weeks now, high humidity, hard on man,beast and machines.

We just hit day 31 over 100F degrees and 21 consecutive days over 100F in OKC. The record is 50 days over 100F in a calendar year that was set in 1980. It looks like we will blow that record away.

Both the fridge and the new A/C are working fine. I am still using the manual air distribution box/plenum until the parts come to change everything over to digital get here.

The new A/C certainly has a higher rate of air flow and therefore much noisier than the original but I'm hoping the new air box/plenum will be quieter than the basic one I am using now. Dometic has agreed to give me full credit for the current air distribution box that I had to purchase due to the erroneous information I got from the Dometic Customer Service
Dept. I am very impressed with their response to my complaint.

I have still had to use the 12V Valterra Fridge Fans to keep the fridge cold in this extreme heat, even after the baffles were installed. But we hit 112 degrees Saturday and 109 yesterday. I supposed that's hot enough to warrant the use of the auxiliary ventilation.

I am on my way to Kansas City today. I thought I would escape some of these extreme temps but it is 100 here in El Dorado, KS right now and expected to hit 103 later today. At least the coach ran great. At 98 degrees it was running at 188 F on the temp gauge and not even registering on the transmission gauge. Of course I was only running at 59 mph. I'm trying to slow down and save fuel since I'm not on a tight schedule this trip. It was actually sort of OK going that slow. I am surprised!!!

In extreme temps I have always "eased up" on the pressure I put on whatever rig I am driving. I spent many summers running the desert southwest in a rig grossing 80000 lbs and I was paying for it. It made me feel better when it was 117 outside and the pavement was well beyond that. That rig I was in was my livley hood and also my way home. I've walked up beside my tires and couldn't stand there for the heat. Pull over and let things cool down a bit, take off again and keep her below 65 mph, preferably 60/62 when it's that hot............and ease on across there.

I have tried to tell you for the last 3 years that going slower is actually quite pleasant!  You can enjoy the scenery and it is often a much smoother ride!  PLUS ... the other folks on the highway will have more time to admire your beautiful motor home.  Have a safe trip.

Takes me a couple of days to get into the 58 mph mode. You do see more out the window and the Detroit sips fuel at that speed. Always worried a little going fast with a heavy coach when the asphalt is too hot to walk on or you start to sink into it when standing in one spot. Imagine changing a tire in that heat.

Glad you are cool and better yet, the food is cold. Nothing worse than fowl chicken salad.

Its so hot in Texas you do not need the stove to fry an egg.  Just put it on the sidewalk.  104 today but I saw that it was 107 in Fort Smith, Ark.  Just my luck planned a trip to Eureka Springs and Branson some time ago with a stop over in Fort Smith. leaving Sunday.  May leave the stove at home.  Can't escape the heat.  Hope the shows in Branson have air conditioning. Staying at Americas Best Campground.  But will be in Eureka Springs Wed thru Fri. Going to give the new to us 02 295 40 it maiden voyage.  Hopefully,  MOT got all the air leaks fixed.

We're up in Island Park, ID (near West Yellowstone) for the summer.  Highs of ~75, lows of 45-50.  Rain for an hour or so in the evening sometimes, and usually sunny during the days.  Getting away from the heat (and the cold) is the reason to have a MH!

I have a new Penguin A/C unit up front and it's way loud.  If you know anyway of quieting it down let me know.  It's on Jeff & Carol's 95.  FoT have had a couple of tries and it's better but it's the air speed that's the problem with very little flow differential between high/med/low.  Duo-Therm are not much help so far.  Would like to see if I can slow the fan down without icing it up.  That is the next thing to look at.

I sent you the invoice that shows MOT fixed the fan speed; or so they say.  Have a number of issues with MOT that I will be discussing with them later..As soon as I fix everything they didn't do, but charged me for... >:(

Keith, I haven't got my parts to finish the job yet but if I see a way to make it quieter, I will let you know. I think there are two reasons for the extra noise, one is that most of their units are used with ducted air systems. They need more air flow for the ducts but to save money they only use one fan system configuration. Secondly, the newer low profile air distribution boxes, the ceiling fixture, have more nooks and crannies and more air outlets that create wind noise. The old air distribution boxes were well insulated with a straight smooth air flow through the vents.

If the Penguin was installed correctly, they should have moved the freeze sensor from the old unit to the new one. If so, that will prevent freezing in the coils no matter what the fan speed. At least that is my understanding. I will know more after finishing mine.

Hey Dave & Nancy. . .just spent 4 days in West Yellowstone!  Now in Big Timber, MT parked less than ten feet from the Boulder River running 1000 gallons/minute past our rig.  Love the sound and sight of cascading water!!!
