Homer, Alaska

Just got home from a fishing trip in beautiful Homer, Alaska.  Imagine my surprise as I was driving down the Homer Spit and I see 10-12 Foretravels camped out.  Apparently there must have been a Motorcade to Alaska and they were in Homer enjoying the magnificent view.  Such a small world we live in.  It gives me inspiration to take the trip to Alaska and really enjoy the beauty of this great state from my motorhome.  I have been to Alaska many times on fishing trips and would love to take in this great state at a much slower pace.  Who has taken the plunge and headed north to Alaska in there Foretravel??

We did the Alaska Motorcade in 2005 with Merle & JoDean who do an excellent job  ^.^d, one of our best trips.

Scott,
We drove from our home in Nacogdoches (yes, home of Foretravel factory) to Alaska (spent a week in Homer) and back (10,500 miles) in the summer of '08 by ourselves (not in a Motorcade). We took our time, doing it in 2 months, and hope to squeeze in one more journey there before we're too old to do it.

We did the trip in '07 and '09 ,once from Fla. We go by ourselves and do a lot of studying first,but no hard schedule. I talk to the locals and adjust accordingly. Spent six weeks on Homer beach in '09. Now ,if I can only talk Sharon into moving there. The weather is similar to our Ohio weather.

We did the foretravel Alaska motorcade in 2007, one of our best trips ever.

We also did the Alaska Motorcade but figured that after the long drive up, we should stay the summer. So when the Motorcade started to head south in July, we turned around and drove back to Homer. We stayed another two months, took the Alaska Ferry to Kodiak Island for a week, and enjoyed some great bear viewing and lots of other adventures.  For us, taking our Foretravel to Alaska is the only way to go.

We're one of the the 17 motorhomes on the Alaska Motorcade. We're now in Valdez, and will be together with our Foretravel family for a total of 42 days in Alaska. What a way to travel with great people and go great places together!!!  We get a lot of looks, and people asking questions when we pull into a campground!!!

       In 2007 , Phyllis  and I drove from our Virginia home to Alaska .Pulled A pickup truck and hauled my Can-Am ATV. The driving up through Canada on military hwy was A very enjoyable part of it .Lots of wide pull over spots to spend the night . Viewed lots of wildlife ,saw lots of fish in some of the streams . I like to get off the road about 4: pm , this is my time to have A look see up close of whats there . I would unload my ATV ,and explore the side log roads .On one trail/road we rode 30 + miles due west in A straight line . Saw moose - bear and 3 old log cabins , one of which still had A good roof .My thoughts were, who lived here ?  Hunters -Trappers -loggers - or maybe mineral seeking types .The streams were very clear , most had A gravel bottom, and most were A foot to two feet deep . Had no problems and liked this type thing A bunch .We did this type thing all the way up and back .While in Alaska I parked the coach at Fairbanks and drove the pickup up the haul road to Artic Circle . Rode the ATV ,took pictures , and just enjoyed the area for what it is . We left home in May ,didn't get home till Sept. I am one of these types that can't do this type trip any other way . If this trip would have been with the club, I would have missed all this .Did not have A single issue with the coach . Now the Road Master hitch was A different issue .It came apart twice amd broke loose from the truck on one arm .DW drove truck the last 500 or so miles to Pender NB. at the Blue OX hitch company . The hitch problems ended then and there .Now it"s Blue OX everyhing Pereiod . A great trip . Trip of A lifetime .

I have to confess I have been fishing Alaska for 15 years.  My wife has, however, never been.  I would love to take her and have the time to stop and smell the roses along the way and spend some real time exploring this great part of the world.  Flying in for 3-5 days and spending two of those days on a boat does not do the place justice other than wet your appetite.  It was such a treat to see the Motorcade in Homer and I had hoped to stop and say hi but time did not permit.  It sounds like everyone has had great experiences on there travels north and I am definitely going to get this adventure on the planning rack.  We are planning a big trip next year to the east coast so maybe it will be our big trip in 2013.
