Bendix Cruise

I discovered yesterday that my Bendix throttle control works when stationary.  However, when moving it doesn't. I think there may be an issue with the speed sensor. Does anyone know where that's located and can you fix or replace them?

I think its on the plate mounted on the engine compartment wall. There is a relay switch that maybe bad. Check them first. If it still doesn't work I have the factory wiring diagram from the factory. Send me your email address and I will scan them to you. Kalen

the speed senser is called a mini-gen and is located on the passenger side fo the transmission on a tee where the speedometer signal generator is located. some times that tee does not get greased and will shear off the drive pin. That adaptor can be disassembled and cleaned and lubed. Also sometimes the wires coming out of the mini gen will break and many times can be resoldered. Good luck Ron

Check woodward.com and search mini gen. they can tell you where to get one.

Benjie,
I worked with FOT Parts Dept. , Mike Grimes (I think is his last name).  As I recall, he told me the Mini-Gen Signal Sensor (for the Bendix Cruise Control) wasn't being built any longer.  I got the last one in their inventory.  Hopefully, someone else can point you to another vendor.  If you can find one they are easy to change out.  Look on the side of your transmission for a "T" that screws into the tranny.  One end of the T is the Mini-Gen, the other is the speedometer cable.

I am not sure if it is the correct part but Woodward still advertises making the Mini Gen, Woodward | Mini-Gen® Signal Generators, on this page. Maybe they are still available.

I have a 92 GV replaced mine with a Halls Sensor 340-011. I also had to replace the plastic gear that drives the Sensor. The tee housing that this fits in has a grease fitting, mine had no grease in it which caused part of the problems.

Bobby, somehow missed this last post!  I've found that part online for about $75!  Not too bad!  Did it just thread right into the existing housing or did you have to do something?

Where did you get the plastic gear?  Don't know if mine needs to be replaced, but will check when I pull it.

Finally, did you have to reprogram anything or was it just a matter of install and go?

there is nothing to program, as the cruise control is only looking for an alternating current to be able to to try and maintain that certain value

My Bendix is really weird.  Sometimes (getting less) in the morning it will work properly.  Then it will quit working, but it will always work on the "resume speed", but it builds up speed and continues to do so until you turn off the cruise power.  Have cleaned and checked all the electrical connections in the engine compartment.

Sounds like one has to be a electrical engineer to troubleshoot it!!

If speed continues to build, remove the vent on the Bendix cruise (engine area) and verify that you don't have debris blocking the vent.  That vent has to function to reduce throttle.

And what most of us with the old obsolete Bendix cruise have done is go to the King Control cruise.  Some minor installation, but all the front to back wires stay the same.  We have about 100,000 on the King Control-- a much better cruise than the old mechanical Bendix.  Cruise Controls for Diesel engines.

Air throttle and King Cruise is the best of the setups.
